Maxi Lopez to boost Sporting’s attack

Argentinian striker to partner Liedson

Maxi Lopez

Barcelona striker Maxi Lopez is close to joining Sporting on a season-long loan deal.

Sporting coach Paulo Bento had insisted that a new striker was a priority for the upcoming season, and the possible signing of the tall Argentinian will no doubt please Bento and excite the fans of the Lisbon club.

The 23-year-old was purchased by the Catalan team from River Plate in 2005 and arrived in Europe with a huge reputation. Benfica attempted to sign the player at the time but he decided to opt for the Nou Camp where he played alongside Samuel Eto’o.

However, the burly striker did not live up to expectations, and was sent out on loan to Mallorca last season where he also disappointed, scoring just 3 goals in 31 matches.

Lopez will now be looking to recapture the form that saw him compared to compatriot Gabriel Batistuta earlier in his career.

Vukcevic delight

Meanwhile, Montenegrin star Simon Vukcevic arrived in Lisbon yesterday full of enthusiasm to start the new phase of his career following his 4 million euro move to the Lions.

“This is the right place to be to become champion. This club always wants to finish in first place,” said the 21-year-old midfield playmaker.

“Sporting are a huge club with a lot of ambition and great players. I hope to make my mark because I feel I belong here. It’s a winning team and I’m also a winner.”
