Sporting rocked by Derlei injury

Knee ligament damage rules out striker for up to six months

Derlei

Sporting striker Derlei will miss the majority of the 2007/08 season after suffering a serious ligament injury to his left knee during training last week.

The news comes as a big blow to Sporting given that Derlei has been an undisputed starter for the Lions since the start of the season, having formed a highly promising partnership with fellow Brazilian front man Liedson.

Derlei suffered a similar injury when he played for FC Porto, although in his right knee. He made what was considered a miraculous recover, given that he was playing again four months later when this type of injury usually means at least six months out of action.

Even if the experienced striker manages a similar recuperation, Sporting boss Paulo Bento is forced into forming an alternative strike force until well into the New Year.

Giant Montenegrin striker Purovic, bought in the close season, would appear to be the front runner to partner Liedson, although speedy Portuguese youngster Yannick Djalo will also be champing at the bit to resume the pairing used countless times last season.

U21 Portugal international Djalo enjoyed an encouraging first full season in 2006/07, scoring five goals.
