Settled Meira happy to commit future to Stuttgart

Central defender relishing World Cup challenge

Portugal central defender Fernando Meira has extended his contract at German club Stuttgart until 2010.

The former Benfica player has spoken of his satisfaction at completing the deal and his excitement ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

“Stuttgart made me a good offer. They’ve told me that I’m an important part of the Stuttgart project for the future. The club’s goal is to continually strengthen the squad for the challenges ahead. I’m convinced we will reach our goal,” said the 27-year-old.

Despite a disappointing season that sees Stuttgart lying in mid-table, Meira believes the club are heading in the right direction.

“We had a change of trainer and a number of new players. Things don’t work immediately. It takes time. I know the club has plans for the future and I’m sure we’ll be stronger next season than we are at the moment.”

Meira somewhat surprisingly turned down offers from clubs that could give him Champions League football. The Portuguese international explained that Stuttgart’s faith in him and his desire to settle his future was a key factor in his decision to stay.

“Stuttgart knew about the other offers but saw no reason to let me go or sell me and that was decisive for me. Also I wanted my future to be clear before the World Cup.”

World Cup focus

A regular member of Portugal’s squad over recent years, Meira’s place in the team in Germany now seems assured following Jorge Andrade’s injury ruling the Corunna defender out of the tournament.

“This year is very important for me. I’ve fought long and hard for a place in the national team and want to prove myself. Success with Portugal is just as important for me as success with Stuttgart.”
