Portugal fight to maintain Champs Lg and Uefa Cup berths
After spending the last three seasons in sixth place in the Uefa club ranking’s table, thus entitling Portugal to three clubs in the Champions League and three more in the Uefa Cup, the country has fallen to ninth place at the start of the 2007/08 season.
This drop is largely because Portugal loses its record points haul from the 2002/03 season, when FC Porto won the Uefa Cup and Boavista reached the semi-finals of the same competition.
The ranking at the end of this season determines the country quotas for the 2009/2010 season. Hence it is vital that FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting in the Champions League, and Braga, Belenenses, Pacos de Ferreira and Leiria in the Uefa Cup obtain good results to help Portugal climb back up the table and maintain the healthy quota of participants in Europe of recent seasons.
Keep track of the situation throughout the season on this page.

Country quota
Countries finishing fifth and sixth in the ranking table at the end of the season are entitled to two teams entering directly into the Champions League and one in the final qualifying round, as well as three representatives in the UEFA Cup.
Seventh and eighth place in the table gives the respective country the right to just one team directly through to the Champions League proper, and one in the qualifying round, plus four in the UEFA Cup.
Points system
The rankings are based on performances over the last five seasons, and determine the number of places that each national association will have in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup.
Two points are awarded for a win and one for a draw, divided by the total number of teams from the respective country participating in the two European competitions.
Clubs that reach the first knockout round, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the Champions League or the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the UEFA Cup are awarded an extra point for each such round. An additional three points are awarded for participation in the Champions League.
