Uefa Cup mathday one roundup

Sean Gillen rounds up the rest of the Uefa Cup action last night involving clubs with Portuguese players.

Group A: Everton (Eng) 3-1 Larissa (Gre)
English side Everton took early control of Group A with a home victory over Greeks Larissa. Nuno Valente was included in the Toffees’ squad, but was left on the bench as Tim Cahill and Leon Osman gave the hosts a 2-0 lead before Silva pulled one back for Larissa and Victor Anichebe put the game beyond the visitors.

Group B: Panathinaikos (Gre) 3-0 Aberdeen (Sco)
Jose Peseiro’s Panathinaikos lead Group B following a comfortable home win over Aberdeen at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium. Giannis Goumas opened the scoring on 11 minutes, but the home crowd would have to wait until the 73rd minute before Papadopoulos doubled the advantage, with Dimitrios Salpingidis adding a third four minutes later.

Group B: Lokomotiv Moscow (Rus) 3-3 Atletico Madrid (Spa)
Group B’s other match saw Russians Lokomotiv Moscow and Atletico Madrid of Spain share a six-goal thriller. Sergio Aguero’s fantastic strike gave Atletico, who started with Simao Sabrosa in attack, an early lead but the goal was quickly cancelled out by Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s strike.

Diego Forlan restored the visitors’ lead four minutes into the second half bur a quick-fire double from Nigerian Peter Odemwingie (61 & 64) turned the game in the Russians' favour. However, young sensation Aguero would have the last laugh as he earned Los Rojiblancos a point with an 85th minute equaliser from a Maniche pass.

Group C: Elfsborg (Swe) 1-1 AEK Athens (Gre)
Geraldo Alves and Manu both started for AEK as the Greek league leaders came away from their trip to the Boras Arena with a point. Half time substitute Harilaos Pappas was the hero for AEK, scoring four minutes into the second period to equalise Daniel Mobaeck’s 15th minute strike.

Group D: Basel (Swi) 1-0 Rennes (Fra)
Swiss side Basel continued their recent good form with a narrow win over French outfit Rennes, thanks to Marco Streller’s goal ten minutes into the second period. Former Benfica and Sion forward Carlitos started the match for the hosts, lasting 86 minutes before being replaced.

Group F: Crvena Zvezda (Ser) 2-3 Bayern Munich (Ger)
Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade threw away a lead to suffer late heartbreak against tournament favourites Bayern Munich. Joao Lucas, signed in the summer from Boavista, played the full match in midfield for the home side, who went ahead on 16 minutes through Ognjen Koroman.

Miroslav Klose equalised for the Germans, but Red Star re-took the lead fourteen minutes from time through Nenad Milijas. With just four minutes remaining, the Serbs conceded to Klose again, before Toni Kroos stunned Red Star by hitting the winner in the final minute.

Group G: Tottenham Hotspur (Eng) 1-2 Getafe (Spa)
Ricardo Rocha will have a new manager when he returns to full fitness with Tottenham Hotspur, after Dutchman Martin Jol left the club ahead of their disastrous home defeat to Spanish side Getafe. The La Liga outfit equalised Jermaine Defoe’s opener (19) in the 21st minute through Ruben de la Red, and Braulio scored the winner midway through the second period.

Group H: Helsingborg (Swe) 1-1 Panionios (Gre)
Portuguese striker Lourenco was again absent from the travelling Panionios squad for their 1-1 draw with Swedes Helsingborg. The Greeks took the lead on the stroke of half time through Goundoulakis, but former Barcelona and Manchester United striker Henrik Larsson grabbed an 83rd minute equaliser for the hosts.
