Rangers 0-0 Sporting - Match Reaction

Paulo Bento, Sporting coach:

“It was a good result, a good performance, and we’ve got absolute confidence in the second leg because technically we are better and tactically, if we play like today, I also think we are better. We have to control our emotions in the next game. We have to have patience, security and balance in the second leg.

“We achieved part of the aim. The main aim was to win, but we managed not to lose. A draw with goals would have been better. It’s a good result but not a decisive one and it could be dangerous. If they score in Lisbon we have to score two, if they don’t score we have to score one. Both teams have a 50% chance of progressing.

“We were perfect in defence, but we lacked a little simplicity in attack. We will have more of the initiative in the second leg.”

Polga, Sporting defender:

“We showed great endeavour in a difficult game. We were mature, we knew how to defend, and with a bit of luck we could have scored. But we’re half way there and at Alvalade we’ll have the backing of our fans to make it to the next round.

“We played well but I don’t agree that we were superior to Rangers. It may have given that impression because we had more possession, but it was a very complicated match.”

Romagnoli, Sporting midfielder:

“For the first game it’s a good result, but nothing’s decided yet. Rangers are strong physically and it’s difficult to play against them in the air. We have to have maximum concentration at Alvalade, but we’ll be playing at home with our fans behind us so it will be different. Sporting took control of the game and did not let Rangers play. What’s important is that Sporting didn’t lose.”

Rui Patricio, Sporting goalkeeper:

“I expected to have more work, but I would have preferred to win the game. We could have scored a goal. This result isn’t great, but it’s positive.”
