Belenenses with everything to play for after narrow defeat in Munich

Bayern Munich 1-0 Belenenses

In a match where they were supposed to get steamrolled, Belenenses went down to a single-goal defeat to the mighty Bayern Munich, leaving them with everything to play for when the two meet again in Lisbon in two weeks’ time. A first half Luca Toni striker was the only difference between the two sides.

The first half was controlled, in the most part, by Bayern, with the home side creating some half chances. The Germans’ first good opportunity surfaced in the 28th minute when Jansen headed a Schweinsteiger cross that did not miss by much.

In the 34th minute, Bayern took advantage of a lapse in defence as Devic failed to get on the end of a Van Bommel cross with Luca Toni lurking dangerously. The Italian international controlled the ball with his chest, brought it down to his feet and sent a left-footed strike past Costinha to make it 1-0.

Belenenses attacked more in the second half with Ze Pedro attempting to combine with Roncatto on several occasions. One in particular, in the 54th minute, saw Roncatto receive a Ze Pedro pass inside the Bayern area and the striker forced Kahn into a good save with a strong shot.

The game ended with half chances for both sides that did not come close to threatening another goal.

Belenenses will be proud and motivated for the return leg, having largely blunted the fire power that Bayern possess.
