Miguel wants out of Valencia

Portugal right-back unhappy with treatment at Spanish club

Portuguese defender Miguel says he hopes to leave Valencia this summer, following a deterioration in his relationship with the club last season.

The former Benfica man, who has been at the Mestalla for three years, endured a frustrating campaign last year, spending most of the season injured or on the substitutes’ bench as Los Ches slumped to an embarrassing 10th place finish in La Liga.

Now, despite the arrival of highly-rated former Almeria manager Unai Emery at the club, Miguel insists that he is hoping for a summer transfer. Speaking from Portugal’s European Championships training base in Switzerland, the 28-year-old told the Spanish press that the club have already been informed of his intentions.

“Valencia did not conduct themselves well with me last season,” he said. “The manager knows how I feel. I think it would be good for both parties if I leave the club should something appear. I have said that I would prefer to leave because of everything that has happened this year and it is best for everyone if I go.

“The people at the club also know this because I have told them that it would be best for me to change teams. Of course, I have a contract so you can’t say that my time at Valencia is over but, although I do love the city and the club, some things happened that I did not like.”

Miguel’s stagnation at Valencia has been costly to the 47-time Portugal international’s prospects with his country, with former Porto defender Jose Bosingwa now the first choice right-back for Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men at the ongoing European Championships.
