Hugo Almeida raring to go ahead of new season
Striker aiming for regular starting spot
Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida says he is looking forward to his second season with German side Werder Bremen, and hopes to take advantage of the gap left by the departure of Miroslav Klose.
Klose left the Weserstadion for Bayern Munich last month, having been the club’s top goalscorer and undisputed first choice in attack throughout the season.
As a result, former Porto man Almeida, who signed a permanent contract with the club in May, could see his opportunities increase in the upcoming campaign, giving him a chance to better the five league goals he scored last term.
“It (Klose leaving) could make things easier and I’ll do everything to be a first team regular, in spite of knowing that I will also start some matches on the bench.”
“We all have to be at our best level to provide options for the manager. I want to play more, improve my performances and score goals, and that’s why I stayed fit during the holiday.”
The new German Bundesliga season begins Friday August 10th, with Bremen kicking off their campaign away at Vfl Bochum the following day.
