Boa Morte: “I feel at my best at last”
West Ham forward admits to frustrating season
Luis Boa Morte says he was delighted to help West Ham United to a valuable three points against Wigan last weekend, after a difficult start to life at Upton Park following his January move from Fulham.
The Portuguese forward has struggled with injuries and form since making the switch across London in the winter transfer window to join the struggling Hammers in their fight against relegation.
However, having now recovered from his fitness problems, Boa Morte played a key role in his side’s vital 3-0 win at Wigan Athletic. The 29-year-old scored the first and unselfishly passed on a chance to score again by setting up the third for Marlon Harewood.
“It was a great feeling to score my first goal,” he said.
“I had an opportunity to get another goal but football is a team game, and if a team-mate is in a better position to score, you have to pass to him. It’s good to share the goals and the main thing is that we win.”
“It has not been a great time for me, and I have been a bit frustrated with myself,” Boa Morte says of his time in east London. “The supporters were expecting more of me when I came here in January, and I understand that.”
“It has been a difficult season for me with injuries and illness, and it has been frustrating to not feel 100%. I feel much better and stronger now, though, and I was happy with my performance at Wigan.”
“Of course there are only two games left, but hopefully I can produce the same level for West Ham United from now on.”
Currently in 18th place, only goal difference separates the Hammers from safety going into the final two matches of the season.
A home match with Bolton would appear a must win match on Saturday, while a daunting trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United awaits Boa Morte’s men on the final day of the season.
