Bubbling Miguel gunning for Mexico

Valencia right-back admits he has ‘matured’ in Spain

Miguel

Following Miguel’s superb performance against Iran on Saturday, the former Benfica right-back now has his sights firmly set on picking up a third straight win against Mexico on Wednesday.

“We’ve already qualified but what’s at stake is first place and we have to maintain the same ambition. We have to take to the pitch to win. We want to stay in first place to have one more day to prepare for the last-16 match,” he said.

Miguel feels he has evolved as a player since moving to Valencia last summer. “I matured a lot, and I learned to defend better. It was a year full of excellent experiences. It was a year that went well for me and at this moment I’m a more confident player. I fell I can help the national team.”

The 26-year-old may be rested for the match, giving an opportunity to Paulo Ferreira. “I always want to play, but it’s up to Scolari to decide. If he picks me I’m going to give my best.”

Miguel earmarked fellow La Liga player, Barcelona’s Rafael Marquez, as a big obstacle in Portugal’s path. “Marquez is a player who has a big influence on Mexico’s team. Maybe without Borgetti they are somewhat limited, but they have other good forwards.”

A draw against the Mexicans will be enough to ensure top spot and a probable encounter against Holland in the next round for the Portuguese.
