Mourinho: “There are few coaches in world like Scolari”
Chelsea boss argues for continuation of Portugal coach
It is no secret that there is little love lost between Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Portugal coach Luiz Filipe Scolari.
Ever since Scolari was named head coach of Portugal, when Mourinho was in charge of Porto, friction between the two has been evident.
Mourinho publicly criticised Scolari over his selection criteria, most notably in dropping veteran Porto and Portugal keeper Vitor Baia from the squad without explanation. The outspoken Premiership manager also hit out at Scolari for his failure to attend matches or club training sessions involving his players.
However, Mourinho, speaking on Portuguese TV before and after the World Cup quarter-final against England, has recognised and praised the qualities of the Brazilian for his achievements at the helm of the national team.
“It’s only fair to acknowledge that Scolari is a great national team coach. He has given the Portugal team heart, objectives, belief and empathy.”
“I continue to disagree with Scolari over some things, but there are few like him, either in Portugal or in the world. I would be very happy if he stayed on as Portugal coach.”
Mourinho believes there is more to come from a team that is increasingly confident in its ability to win silverware for the first time in its history.
“This Portugal team smells good! There are no weak points in the squad. Even those who do not play celebrate in the same way.”
