Portugal-England match reaction

Scolari:
“I have to praise the attitude of the English players because playing with 10 they were equal to our 11. Again playing with an extra man we did not manage to take advantage of the situation.”
“Portugal is now in a position where it can become World Champions, because we’re going to play a semi-final. Of course it’s extremely difficult, as every step is more demanding. But we’ve got the chance to continue to make history.”

Figo:
“Above all I think we played with intelligence. The two teams know each other very well and it’s natural that it was a tight match. Only after the sending off did we manage a little ascendancy. Of course we are all dreaming of winning the competition and I’ve even imagined myself lifting the trophy.”

Ricardo:
“It wasn’t just luck. There was a lot of work behind the [penalty] saves. I studied the way the English players took penalties, worked hard and was full of determination, confidence and faith. This is a beautiful World Cup for all the Portuguese.”

Ronaldo:
“I knew that Paul Robinson would dive to the corner where I always place my penalties, so that’s why I went the other way. It was a moment of incredible adrenalin, one of the most euphoric moments I’ve ever experienced. They say I don’t have maturity, but I showed today that I do.”

Miguel:
“All of the Portuguese population deserves congratulations for this triumph. It was an extremely difficult match that was only decided on penalties. Again we had Ricardo who saved three.”

Fernando Meira:
“We are a small country but with a huge heart. I want to dedicate this victory to all the Portuguese people, and especially those from Guimaraes. We have a great team but the sending off of Rooney helped us.”

Hugo Viana:
“I’m prepared to take another penalty. I sent the keeper the wrong way but the ball hit the post. Luckily we had Ricardo who is in superb form. I think we deserved the win. We felt confident and felt we could win before the match.”
