The Dynamite Defence

Ricardo

In our last installment, we discussed the Monster Midfield, which would add steel to the belly of our beast. Key to that was Meira as a Defensive Midfielder. In this segment we discuss our Dynamite Defense.

In the center to provide an impenetrable wall where the opposition will frustrate themselves trying to break, I see Carvalho and Pepe, both players who are quick and exceptional in the air. With our cavaliers at the forefront rampaging and pillaging opposition defenses, there is a need for stay at home defenders who are quick to counter formidable foes. Even with injuries this center-back role has been solidified with as many as six quality CB’s.

Now to move to the more contentious area our Fullbacks. This for me was always a misnomer, because the best FB’s are only Halfbacks, only home half of the time. Here I have chosen the two most talented players even though they are both Right-backs.

Miguel and Bosingwa are both exceptional and on their day could both take turns marauding down the wings and causing fits to opposing defenders. Miguel also has the uncanny speed to make mistakes and recover amazingly, making 3 stabs at a tackle and succeeding on the third. Very few defenders can accomplish that feat.

Rampaging wingbacks

I have Miguel on the left and Bosingwa on the right. With both taking turns rampaging. This is why Meira is so important because with him always being back this will give us the coverage to defend as our forwards ravage the foreign opposition.

Anyone that suggests Caneira should be laughed at since he is a Neverback, and possesses the speed of a fat turtle. Ferreira unfortunately is mistake prone and coughs up some tasty treats to opposing teams, so should be left out. Jorge Ribeiro on the other hand is a great crosser so I fancy seeing some action out of him.

Now to complete this Defence you need a Goalkeeper. This is definitely our weakest link, so I suggest Ricardo because of his tournament record and experience, he is brutal at crosses and is another reason for Meira’s inclusion as that will give us three solid aerial players in the middle to prevent his flapping errors.

This concludes the Dynamite Defence who will be like a demolition crew to all opposition. Similar to the Alps they should prove to be a mountain too high to climb this summer.

Goalkeeper: Ricardo
Defence: Bosingwa, Carvalho, Pepe, Miguel
Midfield: Veloso, Meira
Forwards: Ronaldo, Quaresma, Almeida, Nani

Balance between solid defence and exciting attack

Bruno Alves

I constructed my ideal defensive line-up to give Portugal a solid base and at the same time attacking flair from the back to take the team to glory in Austria and Switzerland.

Let’s take it one player at a time. Make no mistake, I’m a big fan of Ricardo and believe he was a big reason behind Portugal’s success in the last two tournaments. He played a huge part with his penalty heroics and did not put a foot (or hand!) wrong at Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006, but just because he done it in the past don’t mean he’ll do it in the present.

Quim has been outstanding this season for Benfica (I should know – I’m a Benfica fan and can tell you he had a lot of practice!). Ricardo is not even in the first team of a Spanish club struggling to stay in La Liga so he cannot be Portugal’s number one. Quim’s time has come.

As for right-back, Bosingwa has to be the choice, although Portugal has very good options here. Miguel is a superb player, but at this moment Bosingwa is better – simple as that. His energy is incredible. He manages to be a brilliant aid to the attack but also a solid defender. Miguel is also strong going forward but I believe not as good as Bosingwa at defending and not as much endless running.

World-class trio

Ricardo Carvalho is another player who cannot be argued with. With Cristiano Ronaldo and Bosingwa I believe these are the three players who are genuinely world class and would play in any other national team in the world.

I chose Alves over Pepe because he has had a superb season. Pepe is also a great player, but gives away too many fouls and gets yellow and red cards too easily. Against some of the best attackers in the world that’s too dangerous. Alves used to have this problem too but he only got one yellow card all season for Porto.

Finally, Portugal’s problem position which is left-back. Again I think Scolari should pick the player in form and that is Jorge Ribeiro. He will be full of confidence after having such a good season at Boavista and earning a move back to Benfica. Also, like Bosingwa, he can be a big help going forward and has a lethal shot from long range.

To sum up my three articles I believe this team has a good chance of bringing glory to Portugal:

Goalkeeper: Quim
Defence: Bosingwa, Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Jorge Ribeiro
Midfield: Veloso, Moutinho, Maniche
Forwards: Ronaldo, Quaresma, Almeida

Força Portugal!

    Hello folks,

Have to say I like Scolari's squad. Maniche is out, but time to move on. Not sure about Postiga though. I haven't seen enough of him this year. I have no idea what his form has been like. I feel bad for Tiago, but he can't expect to be named to the roster when he barely played in Italy. Plus, he get's paid alot more money than me. He'll be OK.

Looking forward to our next friendly to see the chemistry of this young squad.

There is plenty of reason for optimism. Leadership and chemistry will be the key. Ronaldo, Carvalho etc. will have to step-up more than ever.

    P.S.
    Pedro: Your English is fine.
    Jaimie: Now-now- Be nice.

    Forca!

this is the final team scolari picked and this is my starting line up for euro 2008

    formation: 4-4-1-1

    Quim

    Bosingwa - Carvalho - pepe - miguel

    raul meireles

    Quaresma Moutinho M.Fernandes

    C.Ronaldo

    Hugo Almeida

    subs:
    Rui patricio
    Ricardo
    p.Ferreira
    Meira
    Ribeiro
    tiago
    pele
    deco
    nani
    simao
    nuno gomes
    yannick djalo

My selections were based on fitness rather than experience. In the past
few years we have not had any decent central midfielders(deco exception, but he is not fit right now) who can hold the fort while bringing up the ball to feed our strikers which explains the lack of depth up front, so a 4-4-1-1 formation would be best. I put C.Ronaldo in front of midfield but behind the striker so he can switch sides as much as he wants without screwing up the formation and he won't have to back track as much. i added some youth in the roster because they(i.e pele) have been very good as of late. I am still uncertain about goal, as of right now i'm going with quim.

    tell me what you think

I think the best choice for the defence is Ribeiro and Bosingwa on the sides with Carvalho and Meira in the middle. The Meira and Carvalho combination worked wonderful in 2006, we made it to the semifinals with that combination. Its all the better that way because then we can have Veloso in the line up with Maniche and Deco.Ribeiro has proven his worth hes the next Valente, hes tough a good size and has a good shot.Bosingwa is are best RB hes way better then Miguel, from what ive heard he hasn't had the best season but he is still a good choice back up for Bosingwa.Rui Patricio is are only choice for Keeper, Ricardo sucks i no he has experience for Portugal in big competitions but look at the statistics he hasn't been playing for Betis why does he have to start for Portugal Scolari is nuts.Patricio
has had a wonderful season for Sporting hes are best choice its either him or Ventura fighting it out for top keeper in the future.

I cant wait for the line up Scolari chooses, i hope he picks the right players for the job and the ones who has deserved to be in the starting line up all year.

    Forca Portugal!!!

    Mr. Pedro,

From where on earth do you have the power to give the players their jersey numbers? Also, you even given all to subs their numbers. From where do you know that it is going to be their respective numbers? Your are “AMAZING.”

You even changed Ronaldo from #17 to #7. Yeah, some of the numbers are on the same player. This is very realistic.

Also, you posted a huge article, but your writing stinks.
  • Pedro,
    11/05/2008 06:42
And he usually doesn’t miss inside the box.Once again Ricardo on the bench since he’s hasn’t been his best this year. Betis took a huge toll on him. And Rui since he’s a young promising keeper and eventually will take the role as #1 keeper if he continues to improve. For the substitutes, I know Pepe is a good player but he doesn’t have the charisma that Carvalho and Meira do but eventually he will get his starting spot but as a sub he’d be greatly used. Miguel just hasn’t been his best either so id be benching him until he starts to shine. The same goes for Paulo Ferreira. Caneira, I know he’s not the best player around but he’s a versatile player any position in the back could be played by him. It was between him or Bruno Alves but we have to many Centers. For the Midfield all of them deserve to be on the team but Maniche is going to have to step his game up if he intends to be in the first team. For the forwards I’d put Nuno Gomes mostly because of his experience on the team but he’s been playing awful lately but he will be a huge morale booster for the rest of the team. Yannick may be a surprise to a lot of you since he hasn’t been capped yet but he’s one of the most promising Portuguese forwards and lately he’s taken Sporting on his shoulders and is helping them to 2nd place and to the final of the Portuguese cup. That’s my opinion on who should be going to the Euro 2008 and I’d like to thank whoever read through all of this. Sorry it was so long.
  • Pedro,
    11/05/2008 06:42
Quaresma is also one of the top players this year and he’s usually on target so he deserves a 1st team spot. For Ronaldo, I know he’s our best player but I’d keep rotating him on the field so that’s why I’d put him as a center forward. But I would like him to play a hole position so he’d be free to play around the midfield. Since Portugal is in lack for forwards I’d put Hugo Almeida in because he is the best Portuguese forward at the moment.
  • Pedro, USA
    11/05/2008 06:42
In my opinion this would possibly be the best squad for the Euro 2008. In my opinion the goalkeeping should be disputed by Quim or Rui Patricio because Ricardo has been in really poor form this year unlike Quim or Rui but since Quim is more expirenced than Rui he should get he post. For the right backs a lot of Portuguese players have been awful this year but Paulo Ferreira has been getting better in the past weeks but I’d still give it to Bosingwa since he’s been the best right back this season. For the centers both Carvalho and Meira are the most experience and they bring a huge morale to the team. For the left back I’d rather have Nuno Valente but he hasn’t played since the end of the world cup so I ruled him out so I think the best replacement would be Jorge Ribeiro, even though Boavista got screwed up this year. He’s a good player and can hold his own in the back.
Simao is the type of player any team would dream to have so he definitely deserves a spot in the team. He’s also a leader so I’d make him my second captain but Carvalho has been more on the game this year, and he’s a bit of on unsung hero so I think he deserves his time to shine. Moutinho also deserves a spot since he’s the most used player in the Portuguese league and has been an exceptional captain for Sporting. Deco’s skill would also be a huge asset for the team.

As for in goal, I gotta go with Daniel Fernandes... maybe it's cuz he's a Canuck... I like the fact he's 6'6" and has some good agility, might be too much pressure on him but I would still give it to him over Ricardo or Quim.

    Orlando,

I appreciate the feedback! My comments were intended to be constructive. PortGoal provides an outstanding forum for people who are passionate about the national team. Keep up the good work!

As most of you are aware, Scolari will reveal his squad soon. Perhaps a future Fanzone topic could deal with inclusions or exclusions from the roster,

    Forca!

    Great writeup Alberto as usual.
Fernando I can agree that sometimes the conversations can get redundant, but one article would be way to lengthy for reading all in one sitting, that is why it was broken into three segments over a 3 month windup to Euro.
I can appreciate that it is hard for most to just stay on the topic at hand because like you wisely stated it is a team game and there is some complexity in breaking down a system into 3 lines as you would do in Ice Hockey.

I have also talked to my friends here at PortGoal about some new and exciting things for the Fans zone as its very popular. Some of which you may see quite soon.

But I think most of the gentlemen here enjoy the regular banter about all the stories PortuGoal, and this makes for a valve release for their insight.
As for those gentlemen that have selected Caneira, I respectfully laugh at you.
    Cheers

    Ryan:

How can you judge Quim based on his national team duty? He's barely seen any time in the last 4 years! That's absurd. Also Valencia is not a top 10 side, they're in a relegation battle. They have top 10 talent in la liga, but their mentality was screwed when Koeman took over. Caniera is trash.

Nice article but, Ricardo needs to be the number one. Have you seen what Quim's done with Portugal? He's garbage. He's great with Benfica but once he gets to the national stage its a disaster. Rui Patricio is my number two, He beat out a goalkeeper to fill Ricardo's place at such a young age and has played incredible. I don't think Jorge Ribeiro is ready for being Portugal's number 1 left-back yet. He's had a great season with Boavista but, Hate to say this Caneira needs to play their. He's playing in La Liga for a top 10 club. Almeida is mature enough to play up top for Portugal, he has disciplinary problems, but is a deadly finisher, he is my number two behind Nuno Gomes. I don't like him but you know Scolari will play him. He seems to show up in big tournament. Euro 2004 anyone? Against Spain and the Germany game in 06 he played great. Other than that I can't argue with the lineup.

As much as I appreciate the comments on the selections of attack, midfield, and defense this discussion is somewhat redundant because you cannot look at a the defense or attack as a single entity. When selecting starting defenders you must consider all 11 positions It is a team that wins games-not just defenders, mid etc. As much as I enjoy the Fanzone part of the website, my advice to Psoccer.net is to choose a topic this is less redundant.

    cheers!

As much as I like Miguel, I would exclude him based on the overall defensive performance at Valencia. I know Caneira is terrible but Miguel deserves his share of blame for their display this season. I would go with Ribeiro and Boswinga on the wings, Carvalho and Pepe in the middle and Quim in goal. Alves and Meira on the bench will provide solid cover which will be important given Pepe's injury problems of late.

I'll be disappointed if Caneira so much as makes the squard.

Alberto, you say dont play Pepe because he can be gave red card but you chose Alves who is the worst fouling player in the whole of Portugal!!!! It should be Carvalho and Meira in centre defence. They were awesome in Germany World Cup. Força Portugal
