Champions League final to have Portuguese flavour

Chelsea to meet Manchester United in Moscow final

The final of this year’s Champions League will have big Portuguese interest. Chelsea beat Liverpool 3-2 in a thrilling semi-final last night to set up a meeting against Manchester United in the May 21 Moscow showdown – the first ever final between two English teams.

Chelsea’s Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira will be attempting to win the competition for a second time, along with team-mate Hilario. But on the other side of the barricade they will face compatriots Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, as well as United’s assistant coach Carlos Queiroz.

Portugal loses Champions League spot

Portuguese clubs lose ground in UEFA rankings table

The disappointing exit of FC Porto and Benfica earlier than expected from European competition has spelt bad news for Portuguese clubs. In the 2009/2010 season Portugal will lose one representative in the Champions League.

In the last two seasons and next season Portugal has been entitled to three teams in the Champions League (two qualifying directly for the Group Stage and a third in the final qualifying round), in addition to three clubs in the Uefa Cup. But from 2009 onwards the country will have four clubs in the UEFA Cup and only two in the Champions League, the second of which will have to get through the qualifying round. Ranking table
