Porto 2-1 Chelsea: player ratings

PortuGOAL reporter Stephen Gillett was at the Estádio do Dragão last night to see Porto overcome José Mourinho's Chelsea.

Here he gives his player ratings on what turned out to be an excellent night for the Dragons.

FC Porto

Iker Casillas - 6. Largely untroubled, one decent save from Fabregas apart. Could do nothing about Willian's delicious curled equaliser.

Maxi Pereira - 6. Solid, and capable of the odd dangerous burst forward. The Uruguayan had to be on his game against an in-form Willian.

Bruno Martins Indi - 6. Was strictly no fuss in possession and dealt ok with the tricky Pedro.

Maicon - 6. Dithered on the ball badly first-half and was lucky Chelsea did not take advantage. A matchwinner at the other end, however, with an opportunist header.

Ivan Marcano - 7. Had his hands full with Diego Costa, but was generally reliable and improved as the game wore on.

Ruben Neves - 8. Very promising in patches. Threaded some lovely balls through and always looking to create. Unlucky not to score second half.

Yacine Brahimi - 8. Has a lovely knack of shifting the ball into space away from opponents and gave Ivanovic a tough time. The creator of André André's strike.

Vincent Aboubakar - 9. Gave the hard-running, selfless performance that was essential to Porto's attacking play. Looks a real find and Porto will not miss Jackson on this evidence.

André André - 6. The former Guimaraes man didn't look out of his depth and capped a busy display with a goal. Sometimes lacked quality with his final ball, though.

Danilo - 7. Formed an effective trio in midfield with Imbula and Neves, and worked the ball out of congested areas well. Hit the post on a rare foray forward.

Giannelli Imbula - 8. Has a rangy ability to keep the ball under pressure and was a star performer. Showed skill and awareness in the build-up to Porto's opener and made one fantastic burst forward second half.

Porto 2-1 Chelsea match report

Chelsea

Asmir Begovic - 6. Got hands to Porto's opener, but couldn't be faulted for letting it in. No chance with the hosts' second, but you sense that Chelsea miss Thibaut Courtois.

Branislav Ivanovic - 5. A torrid night for a player who has struggled during Chelsea's torrid start to the season. Carved up more than once by the dangerous Brahimi.

Cesc Fabregas - 4. Looked a shadow of himself. One-paced and outmuscled for much of a contest, in which Ruben Neves outshone him completely.

Kurt Zouma - 5. Ruined a strong start with some defensive lapses, one of which had Mourinho out of the dugout gesticulating wildly. Perhaps is not quite ready to replace John Terry.

Ramires - 6. A willing worker who showed flashes of quality, but was unable to influence proceedings to any great extent.

John Obi Mikel - 5. A defensive inclusion by Mourinho who aimed to protect his back four. His work counted for little, however, with Chelsea shipping two bad goals.

Pedro Rodriguez - 6. The jury is still out on whether he will prove a good signing for Chelsea. Has lovely quick feet, but offered little penetration in attack.

Diego Costa - 8. A contender for Chelsea's man-of-the-match. Strong, pacy, direct and caused the Porto backline problems. Curled one lovely effort against the bar.

Willian - 8. Chelsea's best player. The Brazilian dragged his side back into the contest with a sweet free-kick and was a threat all night.

Gary Cahill - 5. Still wearing a protective mask and still searching for a stable centre-back partnership. He competed, but was often on a different wavelength to Zouma.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 5. Busy and tenacious, but unable to stop his side looking fragile at the back. Sometimes rushed in unnecessarily.
