Braga knock Vitória Guimarães out of Portuguese Cup

Sporting and Benfica through, Paços hit nine!

The Portuguese Cup 4th round took centre stage this weekend, and in the tie of the round Braga won the Minho derby to knock local rivals Vitória Guimarães out of the competition.

There was one major upset, with Oriental, languishing in the lower reaches of the second tier, knocking out top-flight Vitória Setúbal.

Sporting and Benfica won comfortably against Espinho and Moreirense respectively, while Paços de Ferreira hit nine goals past hapless Riachense.

Vitória Guimarães 1-2 Braga

A big crowd turned up on Sunday evening at the Dom Afonso Henriques to watch high-flying Vitória Guimarães host near neighbours Braga. This is always an intense fixture and tonight's match proved no exception.

Despite dominating most of the first half, the home team went into the break two goals down as a sensational volley by Rafa (pictured above) and a breakaway goal by Pardo put the Arsenalistas in control.

Vitória Guimarães refused to give up however, and were right back in it in the 71st minute when Marcelo Goiano gave away a penalty and was sent off, with André André converting the spot kick. Sérgio Conceição's team held out to register their first away win of the season and progress to the last 16 of Portuguese Cup.

Round-up

"Houve Taça" in the Lisbon suburb of Marvila were Oriental pulled off a surprise by beating three-time winners of the competition Vitória Setúbal. An own goal by François in the 47th minute proved enough to dump Domingos Paciência's side out of the Cup.

The round kicked off on Friday night with Sporting travelling north to lower-league Sporting Espinho, running out 5-0 winners. The minnows held out for the first half hour, before João Mário broke the deadlock with a neat finish. The second half was one-way traffic, Montero scoring a brace, his first a brilliant individual effort, with Capel and Tanaka (from the penalty spot) also getting on the scoresheet.

Benfica made equally light work of Moreirense at the Estádio da Luz on Saturday night, winning 4-1. Two fine goals in the first eight minutes by Brazilian striker Jonas set the Eagles on their way, with Argentine winger Salvio also grabbing a brace.

Paulo Fonseca has got his Paços de Ferreira side firing on all cylinders and the Castores showed no mercy when welcoming lower league side Atlético Riachense to the Estádio Capital do Móvel, winning the match 9-0! Cicero scored a hat-trick, Bruno Moreira and Minhoca both bagged a brace, and Diogo Jota and Hélder Lopes also found the net.
