Portugal’s Uefa coefficient ranking falling fastQuartet attempt to arrest slide Portugal starts the 2009/10 season in 9th place in the table of UEFA coefficients, which determines how many clubs from each country will enter the Champions League and Europa League and at what stage. Points are attributed for victories and draws by club sides in the Uefa competitions (for full explanation of the points system see below). The early elimination of Braga and Pacos de Ferreira from European competition has further damaged Portugal’s chances of recuperating a higher position.
In recent years Portugal were as high as sixth in the table, which entitled the country to three teams in the Champions League and four in the now defunct Uefa Cup.
The country’s position at the end of last season (9th) entitles Portugal to two teams in the 2010/11 Champions League and three in the Europa League.
The points achieved and final ranking this season will determine Portugal’s quota of teams for 2011/12.
Keep track of the situation throughout the season on this page which will be updated on a regular basis. UEFA clubs country rankings (updated 01/04/10)
Country quotaCountries finishing fifth and sixth in the ranking table at the end of the season are entitled to two teams entering directly into the Champions League and one in the final qualifying round, as well as three representatives in the UEFA Cup. Seventh and eighth place in the table gives the respective country the right to just one team directly through to the Champions League proper, and one in the qualifying round, plus four in the UEFA Cup.
Points systemThe rankings are based on performances over the last five seasons, and determine the number of places that each national association will have in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup. Two points are awarded for a win and one for a draw, divided by the total number of teams from the respective country participating in the two European competitions. Clubs that reach the first knockout round, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the Champions League or the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the UEFA Cup are awarded an extra point for each such round. An additional three points are awarded for participation in the Champions League. |
