Guilherme given Academica postFormer national team coach signs on for remainder of season It did not take Academica long to find a replacement for Jorge Costa. The Coimbra-based club have turned to Jose Guilherme as their new man to lead the squad.
Jorge Costa left the head coach position abruptly last week citing personal reasons as the main reason for his decision, with many believing that the two heavy defeats to Maritimo and Sporting Braga were evidence that other things were weighing on the ex-Olhanense coach's mind. But that is now the past as Guilherme has been given the task to right the ship, until the end of the season, as he tries to lift the Estudantes higher than their current ninth place in the table. Should he impress, Academica have the option to make his contract permanent for an additional year. Guilherme has had no coaching experience at top club level. The 45-year-old was in charge of lower division sides Esmoriz and Sporting Espinho. But fondly remembered was Guilherme's stint with FC Porto's junior ranks, where he successfully won four national titles. Guilhereme was also a member of Carlos Queiroz's coaching staff which took Portugal to the World Cup in South Africa this past summer. Rounding out the newly formed Academica technical team are Jose Alberto Costa, Virgilio Fernandes, Ricardo Cheu and Rui Correia. |
