Pedro Emanuel takes over at AcademicaFormer FC Porto centre-back initiates managerial career Pedro Emanuel is to cut his managerial teeth as Academica’s new coach next season. The 36-year-old replaces Ulisses Morais at the Coimbra club, signing a two-year contract.
Academica thus maintain their recent tradition of hiring coaches with strong links to FC Porto. Domingos Paciencia, Andre Villas-Boas and Jorge Costa have all sat in the dug-out in recent seasons.
Emanuel worked as a coach at youth level at Porto after hanging up his boots at the end of 2008/09. He ended the season that has just finished as one of Andre Vilas-Boas’ assistants.
Emanuel’s coaching team comprises Filipe Gouveia and Miguel Ferreira (both ex Boavista), Joao Brandao (ex FC Porto) and Virgilio Fernandes, who was assistant to Ulisses Morais.
As a player Emanuel enjoyed a hugely successful playing career, winning the championship with Boavista in 2000/2001, and a further five titles at FC Porto after Jose Mourinho had made him one of his first signings at the Estadio do Dragao. by Tom Kundert
