Academica appoint Andre Villas Boas as head coach

Jose Mourinho’s trusted assistant given opportunity

Coimbra StadiumAcademica have appointed Andre Villas Boas as their head coach until 2011. Villas Boas built his reputation as a long-term assistant of Jose Mourinho, and now takes on his first job as the top man.

He replaces Rogerio Goncalves who was sacked last week after a poor start to the season that sees Academica propping up the rest of the Liga Sagres table.

The Academica hierarchy feel the young tactician (31 years old) can bring some of the magic of Mourinho to the club.

A message on the club’s website announcing the appointment reads: “The success of Mourinho in all his clubs is closely linked to the work of Villas Boas in his observation and analysis of teams, which has been acknowledged on numerous occasions by Mourinho himself.”

Villas Boas will sit on the bench for his first match on Sunday, as Academica host Portimonense in the Portuguese Cup.
