Tiago seals fresh Atletico Madrid loan“My only option” Portuguese international Tiago Mendes arrived in Spain on Monday evening, after agreeing terms on a new season-long loan with Atletico Madrid.
Tiago spent the second half of last season at the Vicente Calderon on a short-term deal from Italian giants Juventus, and Atletico have spent much of the summer trying to secure a permanent switch for the 29-year-old. Although a €4.5m transfer fee was agreed between the clubs, Tiago was unwilling to take a 50% pay cut in order to sign for Los Rojiblancos. As a result, Juventus has relented and agreed to a new loan deal for the 2010/11 campaign, with Atletico to pay the Bianconeri €500,000 as part of the arrangement. “Atletico were my only option and finally I have got it. There has been a long delay but I arrive with lots of desire to start my pre-season,” said Tiago, who is expected to begin work with his team-mates tomorrow. I find it funny how he says that he's where he wants to be, yet refused all of Atletico's contract proposals.
I get since he's 29 years old. He rather sit on the bench at Juve, than give up teh money. He's lucky that Juve is able to eat some of his salary and loan him off.
