Simao Sabrosa waiting on Atletico Madrid contract talks - reportWinger impressing in La Liga Portugal’s loss appears to have been Atletico Madrid’s gain, with Simao Sabrosa’s bright start to the new Liga season putting pressure on the Spanish club to open talks over an improved deal.
The former Benfica captain retired from international duty after the World Cup following twelve years with the Seleccao, during which Simao earned 85 caps and scored 22 goals. The decision to retire from playing for Portugal should help the winger prolong his performance at domestic level, and the signs are that Simao will benefit from being able to focus solely on his club. Although Atletico lost to Barcelona in week three, Los Rojiblancos have otherwise had a solid start to the new season, winning their opening two matches and earning a 1-1 draw at the Mestalla against Valencia at the weekend. Simao scored Atletico’s goal in that match, and the Portuguese has two goals from the opening four matches. As a result, Atletico may now be forced to consider improving the player’s contract, which is due to run out at the end of the season. Simao is free to talk to other clubs in January, but Atletico had previously been reluctant to enter negotiations due to the player’s age (Simao will be 31 next month) and his high salary, according to Madrid-based daily AS. However, such is the extent to which coach Quique Sanchez Flores has been impressed with the player thus far in 2010/11, Simao may well find that he is approached by the club to extend his stay at the Vicente Calderon. Paulo Bento should have a talk with him once all this crap has died down to see if he can change his mind, even if just for extra depth on the wings it would be great to have him.
Considering all our wingers seem to like pulling out before games like Varela, im starting to get frustrated with Varela i just wouldnt pick him at all soon.
Portugal needs your skills and leadership Simao!!!
