Video: Tiago inspires Atletico victoryMalaga 0-3 Atletico Madrid Tiago Mendes scored twice and provided the assist for the other as Atletico Madrid moved into the top six in La Liga by beating Malaga this evening. Simao Sabrosa set up both of the midfielder’s goals, as the Portuguese pair had a major influence on proceedings.
Tiago and Simao both started the match for Quique Sanchez Flores’ team, while there was a strong Portuguese presence in the home side. Recently appointed Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini selected Helder Rosario, Duda and Eliseu in his starting line-up, but Edinho missed out on a place in the Andalucian squad. Former Braga and Benfica man Tiago opened the scoring for the visitors on 22 minutes, heading home a Simao free-kick to put Atletico 1-0 up. Tiago was then on-hand to assist his team’s second goal twenty minutes into the second period, again using his head to set up Alvaro Dominguez to convert from close range. A few minutes later and the same combination that provided the opening goal put the seal on the three points. Simao again swing in a free-kick from the left and Tiago managed to get across the Malaga defence and glance his header into the far corner to take his season tally in the league to four goals. Tiago had one good game for the seleccao in recent memory and that was against North Korea, but how was he against Brazil and Spain? Our midfield consisted of 2 box-to-box midfielders and a centerback playing as a defensive midfielder and our attack against the real teams like Cote Ivoire, Brazil, and Spain was horrendous.
the point like supremogino said, is that Tiago should be starting, Martins only has the occasional wonder goal while Tiago contributes MUCH more, i believe he deserves the spot, and any real "Portugal" fan knows this!
