Pereira sacked by Belenenses

Coach given marching orders after weekend defeat

Joao Carlos PereiraJoao Carlos Pereira has been sacked as Belenenses coach. A succession of poor results sees Pereira become yet another managerial victim of what has proven a particularly hazardous season for Liga Sagres coaches.

Of the 16 clubs in Portugal’s top flight, only six have the same coach at the helm as at the start of the 2009/10 campaign.

Pereira arrived at the Restelo at the start of the season on a two-year contract. But just one win in 14 league matches sees the Lisbon club at the wrong end of the table facing a battle against relegation. The defeat at Uniao de Leiria yesterday proved the last straw for the club’s hierarchy.

The squad are currently on their Christmas break, and the board hopes to have the new man in place by the time the players return in the New Year.

Dauto Faquira and Antonio Conceicao are two names that have been mentioned as possible successors to Pereira.
