Shakhtar drop interest in Cardozo

Ukranian club baulks at transfer price

cardozo_airplane.jpgAny club will have to fork out a hefty sum if they want to prize Benfica's top goalscorer Oscar Cardozo away from the Estadio da Luz and that sum is out of the reach of Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukranian side are keen on taking on the Paraguayan, but not at any cost according to club executive Sergey Prezker.

It has been reported that Shakhtar had already made an offer of 25 million euros for the South American and that it is was turned down by the Portuguese outfit as Cardozo's release clause is set at 60 million euros.

Prezker would not confirm if Shaktar have even tabled an offical offer, but even the aforementioned numbers are much too high for the modest Eastern European club.

"Clearly, we are familiar with Cardozo as he scored two goals here in Donestsk (2007 Champions League group stage). Are we interested? We want to build a great team, but we have to think sensibly and it's not sensible to pay 30 million euros," said Prezker to Diario de Noticias.

"We are attentive to the transfer market and we know what is said about this player and that one. Even today, various journalists asked us if we wanted Robinho. Clearly we want players of his level, but we have to think of the costs. We are building a new stadium and that costs millions of euros."

If Cardozo is smart he should stay at Benfica, a huge club that is on the way up to the top where it belongs. He is the main striker here and an idol of the fans. What would be the point of going either to a smaller club like Shakhtar, or a club like Man City who only have money and no real hope of winning major titles for a while still, and where things might not work out and he ends up on the bench? I really hope he stays cos his partnership with Saviola is excellent and I doubt whether Almeida would score more than half the goals Cardozo got last year!

Oscar Cardozo worth more than 25 million? Somebody has lost their marbles...

Benfica just lost out on 25 million Euros because nobody will pay more than that for him.
why?

Shakhtar are desperate for a marquee signing this summer but Cardozo?

I think they should stick to trying to get a world class player like Robinho.
25 not that much

When you consider a player like Di Maria went for 25 + an additional 11million on performance bounces there is no way Cardozo would go for less. Cardozo has been one of the top goal scores. When Benfica went to the quarter finals in the CL a few years ago this guy was close to the golden boot and we didn't even play in the semi's/final.

I've heard roomers that he wanted to try something new but at the same time agents and newspapers are always trying to start hype over nothing. At this point if he stays I don't want any more strikers since we already have way too many at this point.

To be honest, 25 million is a very fair price for cardozo. In my opininon Hugo Almeida would be an excellent replacement for only around 10 million. All we need is another winger like andres guardado and maybe another defender and we should be fine.

This would be my ideal benfica starting 11

-----------------Almeida-----------------------------
-------------------------Saviola---------------------
Guardado-------Aimar----------Ramires
---------------------Garcia--------------
Coentrao---Luiz----Luisao------Maxi
-------------------Roberto-----------

we have plenty of depth up front with Jara and Kardec and many good midfieders like Gaitan, Amorim, and Martins.

With this team, anything is possible.
They turned down 25 mil?

Someone has to be absolutely nuts to turn down that amount. I like Cardozo but like many players he is expendable. Take the money!

It would be a wiser decision if he stayed at Benfica instead of moving to Shakhtar anyways. He's not moving this season hopefully he has another great season and retain the championship. Also, it won't be complete satisfaction if we don't advance onto the knockout stages hopefully we can crack the Round of 16. We want more Cardozo bombs!
take it
