Benfica’s Rodrigo ‘excited’ by Bolton moveLoan deal for youngster Rodrigo Moreno says he is looking forward to playing in what he describes as the best league in the world, after completing a loan move from Benfica to Bolton Wanderers.
The Spain U19 international only joined Benfica from Real Madrid in a 6m deal earlier this summer, signing a five-year contract at the Estadio da Luz. However, he will now spend the 2010/11 campaign in England with Bolton, and the Brazilian born striker is happy with the switch. "I'm very excited at making such a big step in coming to the best league in the world," Rodrigo told Bolton’s official website. "The manager has known about me for a long time and because he has been pushing for a transfer to bring me here then it motivates me a lot. "I want to give back to the club all the confidence that they have shown in me so I'm going to do my best to help the team to reach their objectives. "I'm very much impressed with the stadium and the training ground. I already knew that Bolton are well established and respected in the Premier League but now I have an even better idea of how big a club this is. "I can speak Portuguese and Spanish and I'm already looking forward to learning English because it will help me with the rest of my life. So I'm not just excited about playing my football but also living in England." With Real Madrid inserting a buy back clause in the deal that took Rodrigo to Portugal, there is the possibility that, should the 19-year-old impress in England, he could leave Lisbon without even kicking a ball for Benfica. They are not planning for the future they buy for the here and now. Their formula is buy 10 players in certain positions and hope that two pan out.
I actually thought they would use Rodrigo on the wing.. not as a direct replacement for the two up front as that was a glaring whole in pre-season when they actually purchased him. Turth is Peixoto & Coentrao were slotted for those roles on the wing. That evaluation is extremely laughable from JJ.
What disturbs me the most is they evaluated him without giving him a minute in the big squad. If you are grooming a kid for the future you want to give him a little taste of what it could be like to motivate them to come back.
Lets take a look at their loaned players to prove my point:
Goalkeeper
- Jan Oblak - Beira Mar D L
Defence
- Shaffer - Banfield D L
- Mário Rui - Fátima D L
- Abel Pereira - Fátima D R
- Patric - Cruzeiro D R
- João Pereira - Fátima D C
- Leandro - V. Guimarães D C
- Jorge Ribeiro - V. Guimarães D/WB/ M L
- Rafael Costa - Fátima D/WB/ M L
Midfield
- Fellipe Bastos - Vasco da Gama DM
- Yebda - Napoli DM
- Miguel Rosa - Fátima M C
- Leandro Pimenta - Fátima M C
- Lassana Camará - Fátima M C
- David Simão - P. Ferreira AM L
- Ishmael Yartey - Fátima AM L
- Romeu Ribeiro - Marítimo AM L
- Urreta - Deportivo Coruña AM R
- Freddy Adu - Aris Salonika AM RLC, FC
Forwards
- Marcel - Santos ST
- Rodrigo - Bolton ST
- Evandro Brandão - Fátima ST
- José Coelho - Fátima ST
- André Carvalhas - Fátima ST
- Nélson Oliveira - Rio Ave ST
- André Soares - Servette FC ST
Of that list which doesn't include reserves.. do you see any that they haven't given up on already?
We all know Mak won't play either and it will be a waste for a guy they could've transferred for some cash.
Coentrao is the exception as he forced his way back into the squad, but he is the only one to do so. Look at the rest of the squad over the last few years and none have made their way back into the squad after being loaned out.
Although Mdot I totally agree with your system, I wish they would use it.. but I don't think they are. Even worse I think they waste so much money it is not funny. Why spend millions on players you are just going to loan out, you could've spent better and bought less players.
Take a look at Uretta who was a direct replacement for DiMaria quite talented.. yet they let him ride the pines while he was here the year they could've used him they loaned him back to South America before they even had their squad figured out. Ureeta so far to date looked better than Gaitano on the left.
Benfica also have Oliveira loaned out. Over the past couple of years Benfica has been building up great depth and prepping more for the future, therefore as the seasons go on they will have greater options for their line-up. Given Oliveira’s and Rodrigo’s age, it would be great in a couple of years to see Portugal’s and Spain’s top striker prospects playing on the same line-up.
Clearly Rui is buying and Jorge of the jews is on a different page..
His squad selection is only second to Quieroz.. a future champion (4th Division) that will probably take over the helm of the national team,
It will be a rough year at sea where Jorge tries to walk on water and gets hosed.
