Hleb explains Benfica snub

Midfielder admits other offers from Premier League clubs

hleb.jpgBirmingham City's Alayksander Hleb has finally spoken out on his decision to reject Benfica as the midfielder states that regular playing time was the deciding factor.

Benfica had looked good before the transfer deadline to nab the former Arsenal player, but after carfeul deliberation, Hleb opted to return to England to become a regular in the stating XI as opposed to just being a role player.

"I had proposals from Liverpool, Tottenham and Benfica, but I was cautious at studying all the options," Hleb told Pressball. "I selected the club that would guarantee me the best adaptation to the English championship."

"(Birmingham) is the perfect club (for me) at a time where I need to play with regularity in order to gain rhythm."

"I don't think he is as good a player as many think. He is also known to be a cancer in the locker room. I'm glad the deal didn't go through."

I, and many other Arsenal fans, believe Hleb was a great player for Arsenal - he would be good enough for most clubs, except the very top like Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's definitely not true that he's a cancer - he wanted to move to Barcelona once he heard they were interested, but that's true of a lot of players, like Henry and Fabregas... he's not exactly Paolo Maldini but then who is?

It's definitely not the money because it's a loan move, so his salary's going to be the same no matter where he goes. Benfica were always going to be a tough sell because he doesn't know Portuguese and the quality of opposition in the league, no offense, is far inferior to the EPL. If Champions League football was a key factor, then he would have gone to Tottenham. I'm sure respect for Arsenal played a part in turning them down, and at Liverpool he wouldn't have gotten a lot of playing time competing against Gerrard, Joe Cole, and Meireles, among others.
Agreed Ivo..

besides the kidding around.. you pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I think some people are taking it too much like a snub but it usually comes down to choices like you pointed out, as well as some personal stuff in the background. Suprising how many times the wives, girlfriends, and or mistresses get involved also..WAG's
Good Choice

I think it was a smart move for Hleb to pick Birmingham. Sure they are a weaker team than the other options but he does have a point. He would have to compete for playing time with other solid players, if not stars if he had opted to go for any of the other teams. For a player who has spent most of his time on the sidelines the past couple of seasons, because of the massive talent at Barcelona, it's normal that he would be concerned about moving to another team where he could again end up being in the same situation. He says he wasn't able to get into a rhythm because of his lack of playing time and that's a definite possibility. Sometimes a player can really benefit from being on a weaker team for a while to build up his confidence by playing regularly as a starter. Hleb did say that he moved to the club that would give him the "best adaptation to the English championship." I don't think that was a euphemism for "I want more money," since I'm sure the other teams after him have more spending power.

The way I see it, he plays at B-Ham for a season or two against really good English competition. If he succeeds, he'll have the chance to move on to a better team. If he were to have had a rocky start with any of the other teams, there is a good chance that he would be replaced as a starter, which would only revert him back to his Barcelona situation. At Birmingham he is guaranteed to start every game. Good choice.
hate hleb!

and i copped crap for what i said in the previous topic about him? his an absolute idiot and i hate players like this.

Benfica have midfielders anyway, they need to put time an effort into them as they are young, they will get there, it took Di Maria time.

Screw this clown.

Hleb clearly says this:

"I selected the club that would guarantee me the best adaptation to the English championship."

That is a Freudian Slip.. what he meant to say was:

"Hey Benfica is a great club and the weather is great but my pockets will be light so I fancy some huge checks from the EPL.
So much so, that I will go to Birmingham City.
Weak. I know, but I have 3 babies momma's in London so I need to be close to make some payments.

Also England has more randy tarts per capita than any 3rd world hole, and I am down with the scivies. Also I am in love with the Prime Minister!"

You heard it here first.. Hleb is gay and wants to get low in the midlands. Kidding.. he is only gay.

Benfica should be glad they didn't get Hleb. He hasn't done anything since he left Arsenal. Wenger had no problem letting him go. He had a chance to play and probably start on either three relevent teams and he picks Birmingham City because he wants to get in rhythm. He is a player that doesn't want play to his potential because if he did he would have went to Tottenham, Liverpool, or Benfica.
