Benfica find homes for Makukula and Adu

Portuguese striker to Turkey and American goes Greece

AduCelebs20071029.jpgmakukula-jan10.jpgBenfica have tied up all the loose ends on their surplus players as the club shipped striker Ariza Makukula to Manisaspor and Freddy Adu to Aris Salonica.

It was no surprise that the pair were not going to make part of Jorge Jesus' squad, therefore the only thing to do was find new clubs for them to ply their trades.

First, Makukula returns to Turkey for a second stint, but not with Kayserispor, rather Manisaspor. Last season's leading goal-scorer in Turkcell Super Lig moves to a team who finished 14th, six places below Kayserispor.

The Portuguese international signed a three-year deal with his new club, but the transfer fee was not disclosed by either organisation.

Adu does Aris

Once touted as the next big thing in American football, Freddy Adu has been anything but as the 21-year-old will return to Greece with Aris Salonica for another loan spell.

The former MLS player failed to make the grade with Benfica, Monaco and Belenenses. Adu returns to the club he joined in the second half of  last season, having made nine appearances and scoring once.

Adu will hope to prove to the world that he is just as good as his erstwhile reputation built him up to be, but will not be able to do it in the Europa League as the club left him out of the squad for that competition.

Totally agree with you.. I wasn't trying to say Adu was great just stating he had a good run scoring off of the bench.

Like you said reserves can't help much.. I just think they lash out the money and don't do some serious scouting.

They probably have people on the books who tell them this guy is good from their Argentina man and that guy is good from their Brazilian man.. but as you can see for the last bunch of years.. about 80% are flops.

These scouts that they have probably get some kick backs from the teams too, they should invest more money in scouts that work for them, so that they can get more bang for their buck.

Although when I put my paranoid hat on I start to think they are all taking some cash back, paying these millions of Euro's for players in foreign countries that keep poor books.. taking from the club and then getting cash back from another side, building their nest egg on the back of our teams. How else can you explain the 10 players or so they buy a year with no interest but to loan them out or even send them back home. Most never even see any action just bought, a couple of team practices and then straignt out on loan.

Anyways maybe I am just being peril.

Sorry for the mixup, I just seen a few jabs at Benfica over different articles and started thinking you are one of those Porto fans that like to take cheap little shots on each article.

As for not training players, I think there only so much you can learn on the reserves and to get first team action is a good way to grow talent. When you consider the big 3 lend so many players that it increases the talent in the liga that some of our smaller clubs could never afford.

I still think Adu was a waste and has shown no talent, Uretta & Rodrigo are still young, Yebda can't replace Aimar or Martins, Quim is old and was sold, and Airton is still on the team. Mak is the only one I wish that had stayed but I heard he was demanding more without proving himself. At the end of the day with a salary of 1million per year, they could put that money to better use.

I believe he will have another great season in Turkey. I wish him good luck with his new club.

Ok, everyone should of expected if Makukula wasn't going to make the World Cup he wasn't going to make it to the European Championships in 2012 so what makes you guys think Queiroz will call him now. I hate to say this but his national team days are over. That's how I see it.

You're right someone could misconstrue the Jews things and think I am being anti-sem so I'll cut it out.

As for the rest of your commentary my point was that these and other players weren't developed at all, and were actually treated poorly.

Players need to be given opportunities to develop and Benfica is doing a poor job of it. Then mix in Jorge's poor squad selection and choices and it becomes a calamity.

As for Mak who said he was a midfielder?
Also considering I am a known benfiquista first when did Porto become mine..?

I admit I support all the big portuguese teams.. especially in Europe but you are clearly mistaken.

As for Mak not getting playing time they paid 4-8 mil for him I forget exactly how much.. and then put him on the bench. He didn't start a game and only came on 7 times as a sub before he was loaned out the next season.

My complaint overall is that they do not develop players well from top to bottom.

If Helder Postiga played in Turkey he would probably be top scorer there too and people would be screaming for him to be recalled to the seleccao.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Postiga ended up playing somewhere like Turkey in a season or two, thats how bad he's become.

That's also why I am uncertain about Quaresma seleccao call up. He hasn't become a great player again overnight, he's just playing against awful opposition every week. It won't harm his confidence though and hopefully he get himself back into a bigger league in the future...
Be realistic...

Guys, let's remember...yes, he was top scorer...IN TURKEY. ''Top'' players are rare in Turkey. I'll give credit where credit is due, but Makukula SHOULD have been top scorer in Turkey...just like Quaresma should be up there now. People are happy that Quaresma is finally performing... He's performing... IN TURKEY. He couldn't handle a better league, but he's obviously good enough to contend in the Super Lig. If Varela were healthy, I'd put him LW in tomorrow's match over Quaresma.
Thanks a lot Benfica

You really help the National a lot by sending a top portuguese scorer to a weak turkey team.
that blows

LOL are you trying to say Adu was a good player. He had full seasons in various leagues and couldn't even get a starting spot in bottom level clubs. As for Makukula, he isn't a mid-fielder, he's a upfront striker like Cardozo. Makukula could't break the starting 11 and wanted to get playing time, that's why he was sent out of club.

Tell me this, if these players are so great, why didn't your Porto buy them for the cheap value LOL.

On a side note your jewish comments are getting a little old and last thing I want to see is more statements of this type getting this site in trouble or having the comments shut off.

A sad end to what could of been a promising career. Joining the bottom team of a weak Turkish league has to be a new low for this player.

In terms striking options for the seleccao, we need to look forwards now, not backwards!

looking fowards - Yannick Djalo, Ukra, Orlando Sa, Saleiro and hopefully Joao Silva one day

looking backwards - Makukula, Liedson, Edinho
Sad day

My hats off to both players who are better than they have been shafted with.

Adu played briefly for Benfica and as a high mid was good for a goal coming off of the bench.. all he needed was consistency.. that is why they shuffled him out in the Kinky Flowers era.. then Jorge of the Jews has no need for a mid that can actually score and work hard that is why he chose to extradite Yebda & Adu even though all we have is inconsistent mids.

Clearly Aim-Retarded is much better than I see on the screen.. and Carlos Martins who is very inconsistent is a back up that is actually better but is second string.. but the manager is happy to go into the new season with his acquistions...

The more I think about it the more I think we should hang JJ from a cross at the Luz. JJ should get the old fashioned treatment with rusty nails... and we should start by nailing him through the eyes as he is completely blind anyways.

Mak got seven subs in the last minute to prove he belonged under the spectacular Kinky Flowers he was surplus to needs because Fernando Santos bought him.

There is a pattern here where lousey managers buy players and then get fired and don't evaluate players properly.

The are many players that are useful in Benfica's system that will never get the light of day.. Miguel Vitor was shipped out early yet Sidnei who has lost his rag was kept?

Player by player the failures of Benfica's system are risng to the top.
I personally feel sorry for the players as they will never get these years back and have careers ruined by incompetent blowhards.

Mak, Yebda, Quim, Uretta, Adu, Airton, Rodrigo we could use them this year.. but they won't...
