Nuno Gomes turns Livorno down

Striker wishes to end career with Benfica

Nuno GomesIdeas that Nuno Gomes will want to have one last chance at playing football abroad may have been quashed as the Portuguese international refused an offer from Livorno in an attempt to see out his playing days with Benfica.

The 32-year-old was approached by the Serie A club, but declined the offer as it is believed that a renewal deal is on the table, but just waiting for the striker's signature.

The player's agent, Marco Piccioli, did confirm to Renascenca that Livorno did make contact regarding Gomes' availability, but stated that nothing came of it as the former Boavista ace opted to reunite with the Lisbon club after his holidays and see what Benfica's plans were.

"It is true that we did speak with Livorno, but there is nothing concrete," admitted Piccioli. "Firstly, Nuno Gomes has to define his situation with Benfica."

"The team will commence pre-season training next week and at that time everything will become clarified."

I think Nuno Gomes would of been a better player if he stayed in Italy when Fiorentina got relegated because of financials problems. Benfica is my team, but in Italy they have better training facilities and he could of at least played for Milan or Inter deep into his prime. But I'm also happy to see Nuno wanting to retire in a Benfica jersey.
