"I felt extremely wanted" - Saviola

Latest Benfica recruit explains decison

Javier SaviolaJavier Saviola has uttered his first words as a Benfica player and the Argentine states that the Portuguese club's commitment and desire was what swayed him to leave Real Madrid and re-launch his career with the Libson club.

The 27-year-old has had a spell to forget at the Spanish capital with the merengues as Saviola only played 23 matches over the last two seasons, hence prompting a move away from the Liga outfit.

Despite his unquestionable talent, Saviola has been viewed at times as a player who is only in it for the money. But the former Barcelona marksman admits to taking a pay-cut to join the Aguias  and just wants to play football on a regular basis once again.

"I lowered my salary to come to Benfica. I looked at the squad at Benifca and, sincerely, it is a group with a lot of quality and potential," stated Saviola to ABola. "We can construct a team that will be very competitive, capable of challenging for victories on all fronts."

The player known as El Conego goes further and adds that the club's executives' convinction and belief in him was important, as was the consulation of countryman Pablo Aimar.

Reclaim form

"Benifca is a very important club in Portugal and in Europe. Aimar told me very good things, but what really counted was the determination I saw in Rui Costa, the president and the coaching staff to bring me to the club."

"I felt extremely wanted and I couldn't resist the move. It is beautiful to see all the confidence placed in me. I feel proud and motivated, and I want to indemnify these feelings."

"My objective is to play with regularity, something that has not happened in the last little while. I want to feel useful and important to my team-mates again."

While I find it exciting how the "Club" is attacking the off season bringing in a abundance of talent like Ramires and Saviola. I worry that we're all in for another year of frustration with the "Club." Far too often do we give away points to clubs destined for relagation. I believe that with the roster as it stands and with the potential of still more players being added we will have as strong a team as we have had in years. The "Club" has to find a way to go out and dominate the bottom half of the Liga in order to take back it's rightful place as one of Europe's elite. God Bless Rui Costa.
GOOD MOVE!

this is a good move for the club & the player.saviola is a top quality player thats been wasted at RM.
Its also good that we're not taking up the Reyes option. He's not done enough in my mind to warrant a big fee.
Reyes

Reyes is too expensive in terms of salary. He does not produce enough to commend such a high salary. Look at his production last year in the Liga Sagres. Let me look at his performance for you. IT WAS NOT IMPRESSIVE AT ALL. I watched all of Benfica's games last year in the Liga and Reyes really struggled to make a significant impact. If he produced like Cardozo then you could make an argument for signing him.
Boon to the Club

I want to reiterate what Benfica is not seeing. Losing Reyes will be a lost for the team.

Well, at least he wants to play. He has played with Aimar before which is good it will build confidence and chemistry in the team. I'm going to miss Reyes, but now that I think of it Saviola is not bad of signing. I would of perfered Nene but of well. I hope Saviola can bag important goals like against Sporting & Porto, or goals that win us the games, because we have had troubles winning when we deserved too. I hope that Jorge Jesus is "Benfica's Messiah" and wins us the Liga.
