Benfica bring back Eduardo

Argentine centre-back Garay signs contract

EduardoThe president of Genoa, Enrico Preziosi, has stated that Portugal’s first-choice goalkeeper Eduardo will be loaned to Benfica for one season. The news comes one day after the Eagles confirmed that Argentine centre-back Ezequiel Garay has officially signed for them.

“Eduardo will be going to Benfica on a one-year loan and nobody will be coming from Portugal to Genoa. One year outside Italy may do him good,” Prezioni told Sky Sport 24.

After a superb 2009/10 season for Braga and an equally impressive World Cup in South Africa, Genoa bought Eduardo for 4.5 million euros one year ago, but a number of high-profile mistakes in Serie A dented his reputation.

Eduardo will vie for the number one spot at the Estadio da Luz with another ex-Braga goalkeeper Artur, and Mika. All three goalkeepers have been bought this summer.

Official: Garay pens contract

Meanwhile, yesterday Benfica’s website confirmed that Argentine Garay had completed his move from Real Madrid to the Portuguese capital.

Garay signed the contract in Santa Fe, Argentina. The length of the contract and the fee paid for the 24-year-old stopper have not been disclosed.

Fernando is a fine player and I wish him luck someday with the Brazilian side, not ours. Prefiro perder com jogadores nacionais do que ganhar com estrangeiros. Then again, I'm OK with Pepe because I recall him recusing the Brazilian team a year or so before he had Portuguese citizenship, and he is good enough that he probably would have been selected. I don't recall any similar emotions from Fernando. But if there was such a statement well in advance of him becoiming a citizen, then I'd say welcome him in. Short of that, I wish him luck with the Brazilian side.
good move

I don't really know why Benfica bought the other keepers to be certain, but acquiring Eduardo is a good move. I still think he can prove himself to be a really good keeper and hopefully he will have another breakout season with Benfica.

People say a lot of negative things about him, and he did make some mistakes in Serie A, but Genoa's defense was awful and didn't help him out at all. If Benfica can put a solid defense in front of him, Eduardo will make a good keeper for them.

Porto will have a much more difficult time with Benfica and Sporting this coming season.

Fernando is an excellent, under-rated midfielder, but he is still young. I think that he probably wants to play for the Brazilian national team because he is definitely good enough. Brazil has a few good holding midfielders like Lucas and Ramires, but none of them are as good defensively as Fernando.

If he does want to represent our Seleccao, he'd be a great addition, but I am not really the biggest fans of naturalized players. Pepe is an extremely important player to us and Deco was one of our greatest ever midfielders, but I would rather see us producing our own talent than counting on Brazilians.
Portugal National Team Question

I have a question about the Portugal national team. Is Fernando Reges, the defensive midfielder of FC Porto, eligible to play for Portugal? I know that he played for Brazil's U20 squad and at that time he did not hold a Portugal passport, but now he does so is he eligible because he didn't represent Brazil or ineligible because he did not hold the passport when playing with the U20s. Thank you.
Another big move

While I would agree that Artur has had a shaking pre-season, I think that part of this has to do with all 4 starting defenders being gone. Half the goals we’ve conceded had to do with defenders losing the ball in front of net.

Luisao and Garay are coming back after both Argentina and Brasil got knocked out of the Copa. Also Capdevilla should be a great replacement for Fabio on the LB. All that will be left is waiting for Super Maxi to return.

As for Eduardo, he’s a good back up to have this season while Mika develops more and we figure out what’s happening with Julio/Roberto (both keepers with great potential but both had a horrible year last season). If Artur continues to have a hard time once we get our starting defenders back, at least now we have a reasonable back up to take the spot. Also if Eduardo does take the number 1 spot, there’s a good chance Benfica will just buyout his contract from Genoa.

The problem is exactly Roberto going on the way out. So, you give 8,5M€ for a goalkeeper and as he didn't perform you loan him out? If it was a psychological factor the right move would be to keep them as a second-option during one season; the weight of the millions would come off and Roberto would be able to show his real self here and there (Taça da Liga, for example).

Patrício is not extraordinarily gifted, but to give the Bayern game as an example is outrageous. Did you watch the matches? First, it was a team loss, and second, Patrício didn't even play in the first match, Tiago was the keeper. --

People seem to be finding it strange that Eduardo has been loaned for a season? I don't at all...if he wasn't what would we have for keepers...Roberto's on his way out, so we'd have (1.) Artur (who had just half a good season for Braga last year...and who's looked quite shakey in these pre-season matches so far), (2.) Julio Cesar (who doesn't fill me with confidence) and (3.) a young untested Portuguese keeper...what if Artur got injured? Julio Cesar or Mika would have to become a first teamer! No i think it's an excellent move, both for Benfica and for Eduardo to get his confidence back. To the people who think Patricio should be the national team's number one...have they forgotten the 13 goals he conceded against Bayern in the champions league??!! Eduardo, to me, proved at the World Cup, that not only is he definitely the best Portuguese keeper, he is also one of the best keepers in world football, when at his best...

I quoted preziosi 'Eduardo will be going to Benfica on a one-year loan and nobody will be coming from Portugal to Genoa. One year outside Italy may do him good',,do you guys know what his statement mean?..yeah..benfica have no chance to sign eduardo permanently,,genoa just want to loan him outside, and they hope eduardo can get his great form back, and then they will get eduardo back in 2012/2013 season...so pls give him a starting eleven position JJ,because Genoa need him in 2012/2013 season..
Talking about garay,,this is good move for him..luisao's time is over,,i'd like to see garay to be partnered with vitor in CB position,,luisao must be sold..i know he's been the most reliable CB in Benfica in four years..but now his turn is over,,give the younger player their spot...there are many talented CB in benfica,,which is portuguese,,like Vitor,Faria, and Miranda
Closer looks are needed

By the way Artur made an awful play on Anderlechts first goal. He not only came out, he also came out at an awful angle. The second goal wasn;t his fault, but there was an opportubity for a great stop there.

Maybe Eduardo will get his shot at settling in.
Odd but not crazy

A thought that it was a strange move by both parties, Eduardo and Benfica.
I know that many feel that I'm crazy, but Roberto could still compete and eventually be our keeper. A year away just might do him good.
As for this season, I just hope that someone grabs the reigns wins the job and keeps it.

The key to our goalies performance will have a lot to do with our defense, which has to be better than last year.

The best news Benfica got was Argentina and Brazil both out of the Copa. Now if we could just get Uruguay out and bring Maxi home, it would be nice.

Capdevilla is interesting but he just might be the backup on the left. He will need rest throughout the season. Thirty three isn;t old for a center back but it is for a wide player.
I would still love Ansaldi, but he's not cheap.
Good move for Eduardo

He was a disaster at Genoa and this is a step towards reviving his career. Its too bad Ricardo suffered the opposite fate. He is currently out of work. I think Garay will add some depth into the squad but Capdevila? I rather sign Roberto Carlos than this sh*thead. All he does is cheat and dive and remember last year when he got Costa red carded at the WC? I'd be disgusted to see this guy in a SLB uniform and his reception wouldnt be pretty.

I'm okay with Garay. He is still young, having a lot of experience/exposure for both club and country (even though being benched). He will settle in quite well with his countrymen around him.

As for Eduardo, I don't know why Benfica got this guy even for a loan. Now, we have three new GKs, quite odd really. And I don't know why Andre here is so happy. As long as Artur is fit and healthy, Eduardo wouldn't start and nobody guarantees a clean sheet. This would probably mean Mika is the third choice now, too bad. I was really excited to see him fight for the starting place. Roberto should be sold as well.
My thoughts

I think that Eduardo made the right choice. He can be world class on his day, but he definitely has had plenty of frangos(more than Roberto last season)... Hopefully he can regain his confidence after the nightmare he had in Italy. I personally think that Rui Patricio is, without a doubt, the best Portuguese keeper so Eduardo will need to improve his performances if he wants to remain Portugal's number one.

Luisao is a great centerback, but we don't have a great partner for him. Vitor looked good in the first two preseason games, but he has looked very shaky recently. While, I still think that he has potential and a place on the team, he is not good enough to start. Jardel is decent, but nothing special, and Roderick is still not ready for Benfica. Therefore Garay is arguably our best signing this season. He didn't get much playing time in Madrid, but he had to play behind two of the best defenders in the world. Give him time and he'll prove to be an excellent replacement for Luiz.

I also recently read that Capdevila is coming to Benfica. He's a good player with tons of experience, but he's 33 so I am not sure about this decision. I would rather have Ansaldi or another talented young defender.

The move for Eduardo to Benfica should've happened last season, but I don't think Braga were willing to sell him to us. Anyways I'm kind of happy his in Benfica now, but my only concern is I don't want him riding the bench all season long because it will hurt him and Portugal come Euro 2012 because clearly his Portugal's #1. As for Garay, I'm happy he officially put pen to paper and like Luisao he will be coming back to Lisbon a little earlier then expected since both Brazil and Argentina were knocked out of Copa America. Final point, looks like Benfica has found a left-back replacement in Villarreal's Joan Capedevila. He might be 33-years-old, but I have a feeling he will be good for us. I mean how often does a Portuguese team have a player on their team that has won a European Championship and World Cup before?

What is wrong with this team instead of buying all these so so players invest in someone with some ability.

I think its an odd move for Eduardo. Garay also. Both positions are stacked with players and some big moves need to be made to complete the squad. Whatever that may be. Is this the end for Luisao?

This is fantastic news, I had wanted SLB to sign Eduardo already last summer! Now with him and Artur in the squad, we have 2 good goalkeepers to choose from, and if Eduardo can recapture his Braga form, then he will guarantee clean sheets for us...and we will definitely have at least one Portuguese player in the first team now haha!! Now we must look to sell Roberto back to La liga and get back some of the cash we spent on him. I also like the rumoured possibility of Capdevila signing on a free transfer, he has bags of experience at the very higest level, and would be a very good replacement for Coentrao at left-back and would cost nothing. Our defence will surely be a lot more solid than last year, and this will give us the comfort at the back to continue with our attack-minded approach. Exciting times... Roll on the new season!!!
On a side note...

Rumours are Capdevilla can be had for no fee and that Benfica are favourites to land him. Looks like Benfica will land their own diving master now.

Strange move indeed. For Eduardo and by Benfica.

I agree that he won't probably be the first choice (although I'd be happy if Patrício gets the #1 spot in the national team) and Mika won't have many opportunities either.

And what are they going to do with Roberto? An year as second-option in Benfica would be enough time for him to settle and gain his confidence back.

Man, Benfica sure has been active this transfer window, and by that I mean they are buying more than they are selling. They are really shaping up to be quite the powerhouse this season. Add in Sporting's new look and Porto's new (unexperienced) coach, this is gonna be an awesome year. Should be very interesting!

As for Eduardo, I was kind of surprised he was making the move over, especially since Genoa said they were contacted by Benfica. It seems like they are stacked in the keeper department this upcoming season with Artur and Mika there. Besides, isn't Roberto still a Benfica player? Or did I miss something? Whatever the case is, if I was Roberto, I would be preparing for a move.

As for Garay, that was an awesome buy. Period. LFV has done some impressive things this window. Never thought I would say that.
This is indeed embarrassing for Luis Felipe Vieira

He passed up on an in-form Eduardo for Roberto and now goes and gets Eduardo when Eduardo is in poor form. LOL. Yes, great president.

I agree with Rick. Mika will even give Eduardo trouble. Ièm just hoping Roberto, the spanish frango, can still be benfica's number 1 LOLZ!

not sure Eduardo will be given #1 duties at Benfica. He will have to earn the playing time, and this may be opening Patricio needs to steal #1 spot on National Team.

Artur, and even Mika will give Eduardo all he can handle in terms of competition...
