Benfica fined €40,000 over Ramires deal

Lisbon club accept punishment

The Portuguese stock market has fined Benfica €40,000 for false statements made ahead of the signing of Brazilian midfielder Ramires from Cruzeiro.

The Lisbon club announced in May that they had no intention of entering negotiations for the player, only to conclude a €7.5m-euro deal for Ramires shortly afterwards, with the 22-year-old signing a five-year contract at the Estadio da Luz.

"On May 21, 2009 at 21.18 Benfica released a statement in which they denied the existence of negotiations with Cruzeiro Esporte Clube for the purchase of the player Ramires," a CMVM statement read.

"CMVM finds that the communication of Benfica contained untrue information as they were, at that time, in talks regarding the acquisition of Ramires' playing rights."

Benfica, who had been threatened with a penalty of up to €2.5m euros, have accepted the decision and will not appeal against the punishment.

Benfica made the correct decision.... even 2mil fine would have been worth it for this player

Another example of how stupid Portuguese justice is....because no other player/agent/club has come out and admitted that they are going to a certain club, only for that club to dismiss the rumours, so as to not jeopardize any possibility of a transfer.

What is a club to do if the player/agent/other club talks while they tried to keep it quiet? Incredible.
Unlucky

While I understand the business implications of such a statement, I'll happily accept Benfica's decision. It seems when they make their business negotiations public, other teams swoop in for the desired player. At least this time they got the deal done for a fantastic player.
Typical

It's no wonder they can't win anything. Simply a horrible administration whose statements cannot be believed.
