Luz to host 2014 UCL final

Centenary nod for FPF

It was been confirmed this afternoon by UEFA that the final of the 2013/14 edition of the Champions League will be held at the Estadio da Luz, home of Benfica, marking the first major final to be held in Portugal since the 2004/05 UEFA Cup, which took place across town at the Alvalade.

Portugal last hosted the final of Europe's premier club competition in 1967, though the European Championships and UEFA Cup have of course been decided in Lisbon since; with the former taking place at the Luz.

The decision is likely a nod to Portuguese football's governing body: currently known as the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol, but originally formed as the União Portuguesa de Futebol, which will celebrate its centenary in 2014. Benfica will also mark 110 years of existence that year.

Great to have the CL final in Portugal, and this will be a big boost for our local game. Estadio Da Luz is an historic stadium in Europe and deserves to host the show-piece of European football. I'm actually surprised that the old Luz never hosted the European cup final, given that it was the biggest stadium in Europe. This smaller, but much more modern version of the Luz is fitting for such an occasion...
Its always about the money

Mdot. I agree. The biggest knock on Wembley is that the playing surface has been awful. Especially if multiple events / games are being held. Granted the CL final is one match and they'll have ample time to get it right.

I also agree that there's more deserving venues, but London and the size of Wembley are too much of a draw.
Yes!!

Great place for the final!! So happy its in Portugal! To the guy who said they won't make it to the final, never say never! Especially in football! Remember, Benfica has been to more finals than most teams. The club has a tremendous amount of history and you should show them some respect.
Great News

This was amazing news when I first heard it and it’s long over due that Portugal gets to host the main European Cup again. This will bring greater attention to not only Benfica but our liga as a whole. It could help all clubs with better sponsorship deals and even creating greater interest in players wanting to join our various clubs.

My only disappointment is that Wembley is hosting it again next year. They just hosted it 2 years ago? I don’t main the English getting it again but switch up the venues more often, there are other EPL stadiums that could host that tournament. Given how many of our stadiums were built for the 04 Euro, we have so many options to host more cups. Since Sporting already got the UEFA Cup, Braga and Porto should be up next for a tournament.
Nothing can spoil this

I'm happy that only or idiot has come forward. This should be an incredible proud moment for Portugal. Many will say the the Champions League Final is bigger and more prestigious than any Euro. It actually brings in more money.

I would also like to say if the Final was awarded to Porto, at te Dragao or any other stadium for that matter, I would still be extremely proud.
I do feel that the Stadio da Luz is the best venue in Portugal. But there's others, that have been mentioned and honored in Europe, that are World Class. Italy wishes it had facilities like the top, and not so top, clubs in Portugal have.
About time!

That's great news for the country and all those who support Portuguese football. I'm forever a die hard blue and white Portista but im very happy that the final of the greatest club competition in the world will be held in Lisbon, that's a real shot in the arm for Portuguese football, regardless of who you support.
