Luisao signs contract extension

Central defender commits for two more years

Luisao-Celebs20071125.jpgAs has been customary for the last little while, Benfica are tying down their prized assets as the club announced that team captain Luisao has signed an extension which will see the Brazilian remain with the club until 2013.

The towering defender has been in impressive form this season and has followed the leads of Angel Di Maria and compatriot David Luiz by committing his future to the club.

Much speculation had surfaced that the former Cruzeiro stopper might be seeking a new club and would have used next summer's World Cup as a platform to showcase his skills, despite having a contract with the encarnados until 2011.

Knowing full well that might have been the case, Benfica were desperate to hold onto the 28-year-old and opted to top up the player's current deal.

The announcement was made by club president Luis Filipe Vieira: "Everything has been agreed with Luisao for a two-year contract. He still has two more years left (on his current deal), but decided to renew for two more and will remain with Benfica for the next four years."
