Benfica president scuppers Manchester City’s Di Maria plans
Argentine winger going nowhere guarantees Luis Filipe Vieira
Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has categorically denied reports emanating from England that Benfica and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the January transfer of Argentine sensation Angel Di Maria.
“Benfica fans can rest assured, Di Maria will not be leaving in January,” Vieira told Portuguese daily A Bola yesterday.
Reports in England had suggested a deal had been brokered between the Eagles and City to take the 21-year-old winger to the Premier League club in the coming winter transfer window, to fill the void left by the impending departure of Robinho to Barcelona.
However, Vieira’s firm denial of any such deal suggests it was nothing but paper talk.
Di Maria has been a major driving force behind Benfica’s superb start to the season. The wide man impressed sporadically in his first two years in Portugal, but this season has added consistency to his exhilarating wing play.
His sparkling form has earned him a place in the full Argentina national side, where he put in a good performance in the narrow weekend defeat to Spain.

Porto have done this to perfection over previous seasons.
I think it benfica want to extract a big price after the world cup.
