Benfica pair prove lethal combo

Saviola and Cardozo heap praise on team mates and supporters

oscarcardozo_saviola_dimaria.jpgHaving combined for 24 goals, Javier Saviola and Oscar Carodo are terrifying defences across Portugal and both strikers attribute their current success to the entire squad and the rabid support shown by the Benfica faithful.

The South American pair have scored a total of 36 goals in all competitions, which represents 51% of the team's goal output.

The partnership establishd between the two has Benfica fans buzzing that this could be the year the Lisbon club sit atop of the Portuguese championship, but ask the duo and they claim that the credit should go to everyone  who make it easy for them to do their job.

"Firstly, this is due to the faith Benfica’s directors and my coach Jorge Jesus have shown in me. You can’t score if you’re not playing, so I’m delighted that there are people who trust in my ability. I must also mention the fans. Their enthusiasm and the fantastic atmosphere they create is another reason why we’re doing well,” said Saviola to FIFA.com

“These statistics tell me I’m doing my job properly but I’m also aware that it’s a team game and that my goals are the fruit of all our labours,” added Cardozo humbly.  “They (supporters) have become our twelfth man. They really have played a crucial role over the last few months.”

National team hopes

With all the hard work and the goals to show for it, Saviola hopes that it earns him a call-up to the Argentina national team ahead of this summer's World Cup. Although, the diminutive marksman knows it won't be easy with the likes of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Diego Milito etc. all in competition for limited spots.

"The Albiceleste have many talented players to choose from. I won’t deny that it’s an honour to play for my country, but ultimately that will be the coach’s decision. I would be delighted if selected, but I need to keep working away in the same manner for Benfica."

It is a different story for Cardozo as the 26-year-old is a staple with Paraguay and will be making the trip to South Africa, barring injury.

"As for Paraguay, I actually think we’re among the best teams in the world and I’d love to go all the way in South Africa. That’s got to be every player’s dream."

I'm sorry but Saviola is much better than Sergio Aguero or Diego Milito. I would say he's equal to Tevez. Saviola is good, real good and benfica better keep hold of him. Força FCP!

I think if Saviola continues to work hard and get the league title this season then I believe Saviola will go to South Africa with Argentina. SLB!
