Shaffer loaned to BanfieldFull-back returns to Argentina In a not so surprising move, Benfica have allowed defender Jose Shaffer to return to his native Argentina where the player will spend the next six months on loan with Banfield.
The 24-year-old (pictured in happier times) arrived in the summer from Racing Club de Avellaneda with a lot of promise and was even impressive in his early showings. The defender was used fairy frequently during the pre-season and in the very early portion of the season, but soon after failed to convince Jorge Jesus of handing him the starting position at left-back. With the arrival of Cesar Peixoto, and somtimes rotating Fabio Coentrao and David Luiz on the left side of defence, Benfica felt that they had the necessary coverage should Peixoto be forced out of the line-up. Shaffer made a total of six appearances for the Lisbon club, but will now have the opportunity to see more first-team football with the Argentine outfit. by Marco Pereira |

I actually prefer Luis on the left, and Coentrao on a regular wing.. but axing Shaffer for Peixoto is totally about inner politics..
The Shaft was better than bar Luis because of his offence.
Replacing a young guy for a journeyman is par for the course in Portugal now where they build for this next week and not the future.
