Braga’s Mossoro picks up award… and suspension
Midfielder named January Player of the Month
Brazilian midfielder Marcio Mossoro beat off strong opposition from FC Porto’s Falcao and Benfica’s Javier Saviola to win the January Player of the Month award, as voted on by the Portuguese Professional Footballers Union.
The Braga player’s delight was tempered however, as he learned he will be suspended for the weekend clash against Olhanense.
Braga’s magnificent season is reflected in the fact that three of Domingos Paciencia’s charges made it into the list of the top ten performing players in January, the only club to achieve this feat.
Player Ranking – January:
1. Marcio Mossoro (Braga)
2. Falcao (FC Porto)
3. Saviola (Benfica)
4. Castro (Olhanense)
5. Hugo Viana (Braga)
6. Silvestre Varela (FC Porto)
7. Izmailov (Sporting)
8. Rui Patricio (Sporting)
9. Luisao (Benfica)
10. Moises (Braga)
Recognition
Mossoro was delighted to see his excellent displays recognised by his fellow professionals. “Obviously I’m happy to receive this individual recognition and with the good campaign that Braga are having,” said Mossoro.
Ironically, February has been a month to forget for the 26-year-old. He was suspended for three matches for his part in the half-time scuffle in the Braga-Benfica match, only returning on Sunday for the 5-1 hammering at the hands of Porto. Worse still, he picked up a yellow card early on in the game, completing a series of five and thus incurring another automatic suspension.
“Naturally I’m sad about the punishment, but I’m already over it. Unfortunately I can’t play the next game but I’ll be right behind the squad.”
