Unmovable Eduardo prolongs uninterrupted run of games
Portugal and Braga goalkeeper to play 83rd consecutive match
Sporting Braga will attempt to reclaim top spot in the Liga Sagres on Saturday evening, with a win away at Vitoria Setubal. The last line of defence for Braga will be Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo, who is in the midst of an incredible sequence of games.
It will be Eduardo’s 83rd consecutive match as first-choice goalkeeper for his club. The run is spread over three teams and 1021 days in the Portuguese top flight.
Since making his debut for Beira-Mar in the Liga Sagres on 14 January 2007, Eduardo has only missed one of 96 possible matches, when he was suspended in 2006/07 for picking up a red card against Boavista.
Moves to Vitoria de Setubal and Braga followed, and his current run stands at 82 consecutive matches, only one of which was not completed when Jorge Jesus gave a ten-minute run-out to Braga’s back-up keeper Mario Felgueiras in his final game in charge of the Arsenalistas in 2008/2009.
Eduardo’s sensational form this year suggests that Braga’s reserve goalkeeper, Pawel Kieszek, is unlikely to see action any time soon. It also bodes well for the national team in the build-up to this summer’s World Cup, with Eduardo himself admitting earlier this week “I’m counting down the days until the tournament starts.”

Eduardo will be around for a long time. He added another year to his contract recently and his release clause is now 4 million. It may not seem a lot but to a club like Braga it is. Braga has a long tradition in producing quality goalkeepers.
