Cluj extend manager Toni’s contract until 2011Portuguese rewarded for steadying ship Outgoing Romanian champions CFR Cluj have extended the contract of Portuguese manager Antonio Conceicao by two years, tying him to the club until 2011.Known as Toni, the 47-year-old took charge in Transylvania at the start of last month, when Ales Jindra was sacked following a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Uni Craiova. Since then, Cluj have suffered just one defeat in their twelve matches with Toni at the helm, while the Portuguese has also guided the team to next month’s Romanian Cup final against Timisoara. Already out of the race to defend their championship crown before Toni arrived at the club, under the Portuguese Cluj have all but secured the top five finish to guarantee Uefa Cup football for next season. The team currently occupy 4th place, with a four-point gap between themselves and 6th-place Rapid Bucharest with two matches remaining. Toni’s last job in Portugal was at Trofense, before which he had spells in charge at Naval, Estrela da Amadora and Vitoria Setubal. Cluj have five Portuguese players currently on their books, including captain Ricardo Cadu, and have recently been linked with adding another in the close season. Nuno Diogo, 27, of Romanian rivals Otopeni, has been the subject of interest from Cluj in the Romanian press, although the club have played down their interest in the former Penafiel man.
