Ferreira gunning to wrap up Champions League qualification

APOEL v FC Porto preview

Jesualdo FerreiraFC Porto are in Cyprus to take on APOEL in the Champions League tonight. A win for the Dragons will almost certainly book their place in the knockout stage of the competition for the fourth consecutive year. Coach Jesualdo Ferreira has warned his players that they will be facing a frenetic atmosphere, but fully expects his side to get the right result.

“We want a result that will practically guarantee our qualification to the last sixteen. In other words we want a victory. We are going to enter the match with a clear aim of winning it. To do so we have to better than we were in Porto in the first game, because we will come up against a very different APOEL,” began Ferreira.

“This team plays a very different style at home compared to its away matches. It’s their first time in the Champions League but they have a lot of experienced players and will have excellent support from their public.

“We will have to battle against a passionate crowd urging on APOEL, but since I’ve been at Porto we have obtained good results in Istanbul and England, in equally hostile environments. To sum up, we’ll play in a good stadium, with a good crowd, against a good team, that will provide a good test for us to step up to the mark.

“We know that if we win here qualification is as good as guaranteed, but we also know that it will be a game in which we have to suffer to achieve our objectives.”

Without revealing the starting line-up, Ferreira admitted that he would be making changes to the team in relation to recent games. Columbian midfielder Freddy Guarin is expected to replace Argentine playmaker Belluschi, who is still searching for his best form.
