Jesualdo Ferreira: “It was our mistakes and their talent”

Match reaction to Porto’s heavy defeat at Arsenal

Champions LeagueFC Porto’s coach and players were understandably not in the mood for elaborating much on tonight’s big loss at the Emirates Stadium that sent the Dragons crashing out of the Champions League.

Jesualdo Ferreira, FC Porto coach:

“There are games that aren’t easy to explain. We weren’t lucky in any period of the match. All the goals began from our mistakes. Arsenal always played on our error. It’s a heavy defeat that isn’t just.

“The first goal is illegal, and then all the others are individual mistakes by us, which took away the serenity of the team. Whenever FC Porto balanced the play Arsenal went and scored a goal. It was our mistakes and their talent.

“The substitution was made (Rodriguez for Coelho at half time) because we had to run risks. But any mistake made against this team results in a goal. Arsenal are a team with very well developed attacking systems.”

Ruben Micael, Porto midfielder:

“We didn’t have the capacity to react. We tried to start the second half with a different attitude. We were close to making it 2-1, but on the counter-attack Arsenal killed off the game.

“In the first half Arsenal had two chances and scored two goals. We could have reduced the deficit, even before the interval. Arsenal took their chances. We’re disappointed but we’ll turn things round.”

Raul Meireles, Porto midfielder:

“It’s not worth talking much. We have to lift our heads. We still have three trophies to win this season. We’re all disappointed and sad after this.”

Logic tells me if I'm going to take a dive, I got to make it look good not the opposite, (i.e. 5-0) not to mention in a league where the Gunners have never taking silverware vs a team with a fair bit of it, The Dragons where trounced and that is that.
As far the comment regarding the coach is concerned, I agree J Ferreira has shown consistently to lack the big match killer instinct requiered for the European competitions, and further more Jorge Costa will in the near future make a top notch manager, his exploits in Algarve are demonstrative of his ability to lead from the side line, with a few more years experience in a bigger club with European capability coupled with natural leadership abilities and big time experience and exploits makes me wonder how far he could go, Artur Jorge is a good example for him to emulate.

We haven't filled those gaps? How many goals has falcao scored this season? I agree luchos position has not been filled, although micael is gud,but has had bad games lately...apart from those gaps our wing play is gud this year and fernando has played really well in the holding position.yes, luchos position is still to be fully filled, but there are areas of our team that are as good if not better this year compared to last year.so is our team a lot weaker or is it the coach who cannot get the new players to perform as a unit.but even if u are right, than how do 2 players cause such a huge difference, especially since falcao has probably scored more goals this year than licha did whole of last season?
Calling for Ferreira's head?......Crazy

Its foolish to hear these so called Portistas calling for a new coach. Its obvious that Lucho and Lisandro played a big part in the teams success and they are still trying to fill those gaps.

Jesualdo a former Benfica coach but had to go because we saw that tactically he was not sound. When it was time in the game for the team to grow he remained with a fixed mind set and avoided all risks and did nothing to help his team win. As a player on any team you feel that because when the coach is brave the players will be brave.I knew it was only a matter of time before he messed everything up at Porto there was a good balance of players when he took over thats why it took a while.

Coach must go! When he arrived at porto he got handed a complete team playin good football, and while the teams core stayed on the was able to keep them on track with little effort.we lost some quality players over 2 years, but in my opinion have brought in players who can fill those gaps but as a team porto are not able to play fluid football consistently.somehow this is a reflection of the coaching ability of jesualdo, who is unable to implement any changes tactically should the game not be going well.listening to him speak he does not come across as a strong motivator, someone who is able to rally his forces into lifting their game, someone wit a hard hand who gets total respect and commitment from his players.i like the idea in an earlier comment of jorge costa.he is a character that does command respect and does come down hard on players but still gets them to give full commitment to the cause(both in days as a player and now as a coach).maybe to be roped in as an assistant wouldn't be a bad idea at first should it be felt he is not yet ready to take the role of head coach.fact is, jesualdo must leave, its frustrating seeing a porto coach sitting on the bench never opening his mouth throughout 90mins regardless of how the team performs.if someone has seen him up and at the touchline giving orders, trying to solve a situation pls let me know cos i dont see it.
Porto still the best!!!

its a down year so what, its bound to happen when you sell so many great players. we'll give the rest of the league a chance to grab a championship before we come back and win the next 4 again. it's not the coaches fault it just takes time to make new stars, and its gonna mean a losing season here and there when you sell too many.

we've had so much success that 1 bad year is bound to happen. and our bad year would be a spectacular year for just about any other club. playing like shit and we're in 3rd domestically and lost in the knockout of champions league to a european giant.

some clubs don't have the luxury of playing hertha berlin in the knockout stages. with a full strength club i would still like our chances against arsenal.
the dragons will be fine

os dragoes will be fine, devastating loss but ligasagres should be the top priority on their minds. I believe that they will all be a revamped team after this beatdown, it was a slap in the face that will not be forgotten soon.

Hey Porto fans feel better. AC Milan some how pulled off a more embarrassing lose then Porto. That embarrassing score line of yours will be off all main headlines after one day.
Get off Porto, now "you" other fans think you can talk S***?

We got pwned? Yes. I'm not dissapointed in my team, but in their effort. Be scared for next year, I wouldn't want to be a Benfica, Braga, or Sporting fan next year.

We still have 3 trophies to compete for. And for those Benfica fans, hope you can make it past the group stages in CL like Porto has done for the past 4 to 5 years. When you develop that consistency, give me a call. Till then...shut your traps.

Jesualdo doesn't need to go, whoever said that you're a fake a** fan of FCP.

Mind you we banked on Lucho and Licha and we still made it to the last 16 and are still competing for 3 cups. You sell 2-3 of your best players and still have a say in the running then I'll give you props. Always investing in our future here in Porto, unfortunately I can't say the same for you (whoever you are). Again until you can do the same...SHUT YA TRAP.

It's so easy to talk anti-Porto peeps, isn't it? You see Porto slip up once and you pounce like jackels. Portistas DON'T have to talk. Porto has a proven track record for the past DECADE and I can't wait for the next 10 years. FCP ES UM NACIO! We eat INTESTINES here for LUNCH!

Was this what you guys were thinking about when the season started? You got five up the backside after winning the first game 2-1 and there was no Fabregas in this game.

Honestly, it was pitiful, but that's because Arsenal were that good. Now do you see that first game being a fluke? You only have the cups to win because you are out of the running for the championship and if you're not careful, will lose out on the final Champions League spot for next season too.

Hulk was crap as usual, Bruno Alves was nowhere to be found, only to pick the ball out of the net, Varela and Micael were also invisible and based on this performance, don't deserve to go to South Africa, where there's no margin for error.

Benfica and Sporting have also been beaten badly in the past, now here's yours - welcome to the club! That being said, good luck to both Lisbon teams because they now have to carry the torch for Portugal.

SupremoGino is a communist and supports the Salazar empowered Benfica era. Ignore his thoughts and ideas because they are warped by an unwillingness to see what is real but rather what is preferable.
Porto paid to lose... come on!

SupremoGino's comments made me laugh! To think that Porto would be paid to lose is ridiculous, especially as it's normally been the case that Porto have in the past paid others to lose!

Last nights performance was poor and not what we've come to expect from a normally well disciplined Porto side. Although I wasn't expecting Porto to win it was an embarrassing result not only for Porto fans but Portuguese football in general.

Our hopes are now with Sporting (who seem to have found their form of late) and Benfica (who have been the most consistent Portuguese side this year).

As for Porto's demise, it happens to all big clubs. They are going through a transitional period and no doubt will rebuild and come back stronger... just look at Benfica!

Although Porto don't have the fan base of Benfica they do have a well run club and are financially capable of attracting great players and that is probably what they are short of at the moment... a great player!

Personally I think Porto should buy Deco back who would help the likes of young Micael develop and maybe bring Querisma back from the wilderness of Italian football. However, they'll probably just buy a few more South Americans and sell a couple more to make a profit so that Pinto da Costa is happy!

Let's face it, if Porto weren’t under close investigation for match fixing then they would probably be winning a lot more games.... read into that what you will?

I can't stand to see this guy coach anymore. What the hell was he thinking putting an extremely young centre back in Nuno Andre Coelho on as a defensive midfielder? And he says putting on Rodriguez was a risk? This guy is absolutely idiotic, and I hope Porto seeks a proper replacement for next year. Here's hoping Benfica and Sporting make a name for Portugal in the Europa League, and erase this embarrassment by Porto all us fans want to apologize for.
No more excuses

This is all bs. They were paid off to lose. I am not convinced that Porto played like Porto. I dont understand what plan it was to slow tempo the game. Arsenal was in attack mode no matter what. I havent seen this team make so many stupid mistakes. The ref made alot of bias calls. This match was fixed. End of story.
