Jesualdo Ferreira: “It was our mistakes and their talent”
Match reaction to Porto’s heavy defeat at Arsenal
FC Porto’s coach and players were understandably not in the mood for elaborating much on tonight’s big loss at the Emirates Stadium that sent the Dragons crashing out of the Champions League.
Jesualdo Ferreira, FC Porto coach:
“There are games that aren’t easy to explain. We weren’t lucky in any period of the match. All the goals began from our mistakes. Arsenal always played on our error. It’s a heavy defeat that isn’t just.
“The first goal is illegal, and then all the others are individual mistakes by us, which took away the serenity of the team. Whenever FC Porto balanced the play Arsenal went and scored a goal. It was our mistakes and their talent.
“The substitution was made (Rodriguez for Coelho at half time) because we had to run risks. But any mistake made against this team results in a goal. Arsenal are a team with very well developed attacking systems.”
Ruben Micael, Porto midfielder:
“We didn’t have the capacity to react. We tried to start the second half with a different attitude. We were close to making it 2-1, but on the counter-attack Arsenal killed off the game.
“In the first half Arsenal had two chances and scored two goals. We could have reduced the deficit, even before the interval. Arsenal took their chances. We’re disappointed but we’ll turn things round.”
Raul Meireles, Porto midfielder:
“It’s not worth talking much. We have to lift our heads. We still have three trophies to win this season. We’re all disappointed and sad after this.”

As far the comment regarding the coach is concerned, I agree J Ferreira has shown consistently to lack the big match killer instinct requiered for the European competitions, and further more Jorge Costa will in the near future make a top notch manager, his exploits in Algarve are demonstrative of his ability to lead from the side line, with a few more years experience in a bigger club with European capability coupled with natural leadership abilities and big time experience and exploits makes me wonder how far he could go, Artur Jorge is a good example for him to emulate.
we've had so much success that 1 bad year is bound to happen. and our bad year would be a spectacular year for just about any other club. playing like shit and we're in 3rd domestically and lost in the knockout of champions league to a european giant.
some clubs don't have the luxury of playing hertha berlin in the knockout stages. with a full strength club i would still like our chances against arsenal.
We still have 3 trophies to compete for. And for those Benfica fans, hope you can make it past the group stages in CL like Porto has done for the past 4 to 5 years. When you develop that consistency, give me a call. Till then...shut your traps.
Jesualdo doesn't need to go, whoever said that you're a fake a** fan of FCP.
Mind you we banked on Lucho and Licha and we still made it to the last 16 and are still competing for 3 cups. You sell 2-3 of your best players and still have a say in the running then I'll give you props. Always investing in our future here in Porto, unfortunately I can't say the same for you (whoever you are). Again until you can do the same...SHUT YA TRAP.
It's so easy to talk anti-Porto peeps, isn't it? You see Porto slip up once and you pounce like jackels. Portistas DON'T have to talk. Porto has a proven track record for the past DECADE and I can't wait for the next 10 years. FCP ES UM NACIO! We eat INTESTINES here for LUNCH!
Honestly, it was pitiful, but that's because Arsenal were that good. Now do you see that first game being a fluke? You only have the cups to win because you are out of the running for the championship and if you're not careful, will lose out on the final Champions League spot for next season too.
Hulk was crap as usual, Bruno Alves was nowhere to be found, only to pick the ball out of the net, Varela and Micael were also invisible and based on this performance, don't deserve to go to South Africa, where there's no margin for error.
Benfica and Sporting have also been beaten badly in the past, now here's yours - welcome to the club! That being said, good luck to both Lisbon teams because they now have to carry the torch for Portugal.
Last nights performance was poor and not what we've come to expect from a normally well disciplined Porto side. Although I wasn't expecting Porto to win it was an embarrassing result not only for Porto fans but Portuguese football in general.
Our hopes are now with Sporting (who seem to have found their form of late) and Benfica (who have been the most consistent Portuguese side this year).
As for Porto's demise, it happens to all big clubs. They are going through a transitional period and no doubt will rebuild and come back stronger... just look at Benfica!
Although Porto don't have the fan base of Benfica they do have a well run club and are financially capable of attracting great players and that is probably what they are short of at the moment... a great player!
Personally I think Porto should buy Deco back who would help the likes of young Micael develop and maybe bring Querisma back from the wilderness of Italian football. However, they'll probably just buy a few more South Americans and sell a couple more to make a profit so that Pinto da Costa is happy!
Let's face it, if Porto weren’t under close investigation for match fixing then they would probably be winning a lot more games.... read into that what you will?
