Champions League: Figo happy to have avoided Barca, United

Portuguese legend reflects on draw

Luis Figo says he is pleased former club Internazionale have avoided tournament favourites Barcelona and Manchester United in Friday’s draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Fresh from knocking Chelsea out at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, Jose Mourinho’s Italian champions were paired with CSKA Moscow of Russia in the last eight of the tournament. Should the Nerazurri make it past CSKA, Inter will meet either Barcelona or Arsenal in the semi-finals.

“You cannot choose your opponents in a draw, but it’s always better if you can avoid certain teams. It's always difficult to evaluate the teams you play against because at this point they are all top quality, but Inter can be happy because we avoided the big names like Barcelona and Manchester United,” said Figo, when asked for his reaction.

“We will have two tough games with CSKA Moscow and Inter will have to show their potential and demonstrate their ability to reach the final of the Champions League. Barcelona or Arsenal? To win the Champions League, we will have to beat all the teams, even the strongest. Inter have to think only about winning.”

Quarter-final/semi-final draw:

Bayern Munich (Ger) or Manchester United (Eng) vs. Lyon (Fra) or Bordeaux (Fra)

Internazionale (Ita) or CSKA Moscow (Rus) vs. Arsenal (Eng) or Barcelona (Spa)
