Portugal-Macedonia match reaction

Paulo Bento: “We will get to the Germany game in good shape”

Cristiano RonaldoWhile recognising his team was far from its best, Paulo Bento refused to be downbeat after the Selecção played out a tame goalless draw against Macedonia. The coach and his players were unanimous in declaring that improvement will be visible in Portugal’s final friendly match before Euro 2012, next week against Turkey.

Paulo Bento, Portugal coach:

“Overall it was a poor result and a poor display. But I’m not worried. Obviously I would have liked us to play better and to have won, but we know it’s preparation game. You know me well enough to know I’m not one for great euphoria or great depressions.

“I’m as convinced after this 0-0 draw as before that we will get to the Germany game in good shape. Of course, we have things to correct. The problem was essentially the slowness of the attacking process which affected our dynamics. It wasn’t a question of attitude.

“It’s positive that we didn’t get any injuries. Other positive aspects include seeing Nani adapt well to another position and then finishing the game with three defenders, taking more of a risk, but retaining a level of patience and the capacity to adapt to other situations.”

Beto, Portugal goalkeeper, who played his second game, three years after his debut:

“It’s a sensation that makes me very happy. Representing my country is a source of pride for me. I felt fulfilled. We could have done a little better in terms of the performance and the result, but I believe we’ll show ourselves to be a very strong team at the Euro.”

João Pereira, Portugal right-back:

“This is what these games are for; to improve and to be strong at the Euro. The most important thing is going to be the European Championship itself. My transfer? It was good for all parties. Now my future is sorted I’ve got a clear head and I’m more relaxed.”

João Moutinho, Portugal midfielder:

“We have a lot to work on, but that’s what these games are for. We played against a team that was defending from before the halfway line and it made things difficult, but we have to move the ball more quickly. We have to improve in all aspects and get to the next game, on Saturday, better than we were today. We are in a tough group and we want to improve our game.”

Ricardo Quaresma, Portugal winger:

“I’m proud to represent our country and it’s sad when our fans whistle us instead of supporting us, but I can handle it. I brush off the whistles, I’m used to it, I just don’t understand why they do it. It’s natural that the players are tired at this moment, that mistakes are made, but that’s why we are here, to work hard and to correct things.”

Bruno Alves, Portugal defender:

“It wasn’t the result we expected, but we are preparing well, and we’ll continue along our road. We gave our best, we always want to win, but the other team was trying too. We have quality and the goals will come. This match will give us rhythm, we’ll be better in the next game, with more velocity."

I somewhat agree with some of the comments that have been posted about the draw not being a really significant result for Portugal, especially since all of the other teams in the “group of death” (GOD) lost in their friendlies. At the same, however, Portugal is currently ranked 5th in the FIFA rankings, but lost to a country in 98th position. Germany lost 5-3, but at least they lost to a team in the top 20. The situation for Denmark is even more excusable since Brazil are ranked 6th and are always a formidable opponent.
Of the four GOD teams, Holland probably had the worst result of all, as Bulgaria are currently ranked 96th...only two spots ahead of Macedonia. Nevertheless, I don’t think we should be measuring their performance against those of the other teams since there is, at least in theory, supposed to be a massive gulf in the quality of Portugal and Macedonia. Sure there was experimentation but Bento did field a weak team and Portugal should have won this game regardless. At the end of the day, the result is somewhat alarming, but I think it’s still very difficult to predict who will make it out of the GOD alive.
On another note, I’m all for democracy and the right to free speech, but Canada’s comment (1st one below) should probably be removed from this page as it is just plain hateful and adds no value to this discussion.

I'm going to ignore the comments by Canada, since he seems to be lacking any education himself.

Yes the fans are harsh, but they paid good money are nobody was happy with what they saw. By the way Spanish and Brazilian fans have booed their teams even when they were winning.

I understand that friendlys are to try new payers, formations and tactics. But not with only two matches before the Euros. At this point we should be solidifying the squad and tactics, not trying new things.
Nani at the attacking mid position? Really? He's been selfish playing out wide, how do you think he'll be as a provider? Big difference in spearheading an attack and being a winger that pinches in.
What the heck has happened to Moutinho? I have been critical of him and have gotten killed for it, but clearly he's not being counted on if this is what we're looking at two matches before the Euros.
Why do we continually put our players in positions they haven't played or are even accustomed to?

This result meant nothing, but the way it came about does.

4-1-1-3-1 with Nani
16 Sunday, 27 May 2012 22:22
It may be too late for this but I think its worth a shot to position Nani as an attacking midfielder. If you look at our 2nd goal vs Bosnia.. from the middle he receives the ball in space. He has options with Postiga straight ahead and Pereira running in behind from the right. I think he could slot nicely down the middle. Moutinho should be central midfielder with Veloso/Custódio as a pure DM.

So a 4-1-1-3-1 looks like this:

---------------- Postiga ------------------
C.Ronaldo --- Nani --- Quaresma
---------------- Moutinho ---------------
------------- Veloso --------------------
Coentrao --- Alves --- Pepe --- Pereira
---------------- Patricio ------------------

It's a very offensive formation with a defensive midfielder for protection and we can attack through the middle instead playing it to the wings all the time.

I can't believe the comments on here. Most of the players appeared to be giving a half ass effort the whole game. The good folks in crowd paid good money to watch these players give their all and didn't get their monies worth. Typical RQ for him to be self centered. He describes the players as tired and he's proud to be part of the team. No excuse for the showing. Show a little pride and admit you and the team sucked against a sub par squad. RQ: Its only natural for the fans to react the way they did and if you don't want to show effort than leave.

When Ronaldo goes off the field saying that our fans are horrible to the camera like Rooney did then you can share your opinion.

We just have higher standards for our players than English fans.Wouldn't you?

Now that I've had some time to think about it, this really isn't a big set back. Especially considering that Germany, Holland and Denmark all LOST. Friendlies rarely mean much.

At the same time, I was hoping Bento would have tried a few different thinks. Firstly, I do not think Queresma should be on the team. Apparently, he was his typical wasteful, individualistic self. He loses the ball way too much because of it.

Some one posted a comment on another thread that I've been meaning to bring up. Why not try 4-4-2. This would have been an ideal game to try it out. It doesn't mean we would abandon 4-3-3. It would be a tactical advantage to be able to use both formations. Tell me what you think!!

Patricio

Pereira - Alves - Pepe - Coentrao

Meireles - Veloso - Moutinho - Nani

You guys are dreaming if you think Portuguese fans are the only ones that boo their national team. Felipe/London...you're from England so you should know better than to suggest that Portuguese fans should be like England fans...English fans have booed the national team off on several occasions...all it takes a quick search of youtube to find several videos of this.

Im not saying this to justify what happened yesterday, but this isn't a phenomenon that is unique to the Portuguese team. Personally, I wouldn't boo the team, however I can understand the frustration of the spectators. You're playing against a team in 98th place in the world and you only manage a nil-nil draw? I wouldn't do it, but the thought would cross my mind...
agree

100% it makes no sense to whistle and be negative to players that play best when confident and that have to be brave and take on opponents. Encouragement is all that is needed right now and that will help the team come the first game v Germany.

While I am in agreement that jeering players is dumb. I always get the feeling that Quaresma is a narcissist. he always tries the fancy footwork trying to look great in front of the audience.

While it looks nice, if you get caught with the fancy tricks you are now defending and trying to cancel the counter attack. The point of the game is to keep possession and score goals. points are not awarded for flicking the ball with your foot or some insane backheel.

I want to see the whole team do good, and I hope Quaresma improves to the form he was back when he was just coming on to the scene.
Macedonia - Portugal - draw

Yes, Portugal did not play well but maybe the reason they could not perform better should be found in a well planned and disciplined game by the Macedonian side. Let's give credit where credit is due: Good game Macedonians!!!
let's see...

b any comment:
Other positive aspects include seeing Nani adapt well to another position!!!!!!
will he play him as an AMF????
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhh I'd like to see the three of them playing: Nani, Ronaldo, Quaresma, and plz plz plz play Nelson Oliveira! He was the only one who left something to remember yesterday!Remeber the shot he took!?He's physical, he controlled the ball, had a dribble ans shot...

I'll be happy to see Veloso, Meireles and Nani RESPECTIVELY as DMF, CMF and AMF!
Ronaldo and Quaresma on wings, Oliveira as a striker but I don't believe Bento's going to start him!

Let's see, those games don't reflect anything!!!Thanks God we've got no injuries!

Seleccao all the way!Forca Portugal!Support the team and stop whistlinggg!!!!

First off all this was a warm up game. Guys are not going to go all out as they want to avoid injury. These games should give us an opportunity to try out some new things and to try help guys prepare for their different roles in the tournament. Is anyone ready to right off Germany because of their loss? Indeed, Netherlands deployed a very strong lineup and loss to Bulgaria. Their should be much more concerned in that camp than in Portugal's. Let's not forget that we deployed a fairly unorthodox lineup combination and than played against a team that utilized a very negative/defensive style of play. So it's not surprising that we had trouble scoring goals. Against a better Turkey side who will actually try to attack Portugal will be able to show it's quality.

What I found most interesting in this game was seeing Nani not on the wing but in an attacking midfielder role. Assuming Quaresma or perhaps Varela can get their acts together a lineup which saw Meireles playing his original holding midfielder role with Nani and Moutinho in the attacking roles would add a lot of creativity and speed to our attack:

Perreira Alves Pepe Coentrao

Meireles
Nani Moutino

Quaresma/Varela Ronaldo

Nelson
Just a friendly

You could see Portugal didn't even hit second gear. Let's see next week vs Turkey. Not like our group opponents faired much better, all losing, granted better opposition, but can't read much into it.
With Quaresma, Portuguese fans need to support the team !
2 Sunday, 27 May 2012 01:16
Portuguese fans have a poor mentality when things are going wrong they just do not support the team, just support the team, Yes I understand you want Portugal to do well but obviously the players want Portugal to do well more than us! through the good times and bad times, Wish we were one of them nations with a amazing national backing, like Southern American teams or like England but were not, but please support the team! Friendlies are friendlies anyway's. FORCA PORTUGAL SEMPRE!
Portuguese Fans Jeering.

Agreed with Quaresma, the Portuguese fans are pathetic. A high frequency of mental retardation coupled with low levels of education must be the reason for it.
