Beto unfazed by Turkey defeat

Goalkeeper says there's no reason to panic as squad depart for Euros

beto2.jpgThe Portuguese squad completed their final training session on home soil today before departing for Euro 2012. The session took place at the Estádio da Luz, the scene of Saturday’s disappointing defeat to Turkey, and afterwards goalkeeper Beto met the press to discuss how the match has affected preparations ahead of the tournament.

“The performance was much better than the result. Turkey managed four or five shots and scored three goals. I was pleased with the display, not least because we tried things that we had not done before. It is true that we made mistakes, we are the first ones to admit it, but it is better to have made these mistakes now rather than on Saturday.”

The third-choice goalkeeper went on to insist that getting these errors out of their system will ensure that the Portuguese players are better prepared once the tournament begins:

“Mistakes can always happen in sport. Nobody wants them to happen during the tournament so if they are going to happen it may as well be now. We are working every day to improve both individually and collectively to ensure that when we arrive at the Euros we are even stronger and do not make the same mistakes again.”

Beto, who has spent this season on loan from Porto at Romanian side CFR Cluj where he won the league, did admit that while such defeats were hardly ideal preparation for a major tournament, the qualities that the squad have shown since getting together for their training camp provide plenty of reason for hope:

“If we can take the same spirit, heart and togetherness that we have shown over the last fifteen days onto the field of play then we can fight for victory in all three games. We are going to face up to Germany and look them straight in the eye; we desperately need a win to boost our confidence.”

No pressure

Many have tipped Portugal for an early exit having been drawn in the same group as Germany and the Netherlands, but Beto believes that being in such a strong pool could actually have a positive effect on how Portugal go into the tournament:

“Portugal is not one of the two favourites, so we are not under any pressure. We are fully aware of what we can do. Of course we are determined to give a good account of ourselves, to go as far as possible, and to make all of those who believe in us very proud. We are carrying confidence and hope in our luggage.”

The thirty-year-old goalkeeper clearly feels at home within the squad, despite going into the tournament with just two caps under his belt:

“I have a great relationship with all of the players. I am one of the oldest so I do like to speak with everybody, to give advice, to say my opinion, but above all I like everybody else want to help us to achieve our goals. There are twenty-three captains in this team. We all have a little bit of this in us.”

The squad are due to meet the Portuguese president Cavaco Silva in Belem later this evening before flying out to Poland tonight. One hopes that when they return to Portugal it will be on the back of a more positive performance than that which sees them depart.

Last time we lost to Turkey in a friendly was the last game before the 2000 Euro and we got down 2-0 to England and could have won the tournament! We even beat the Germans 3-0! Gotta have faith brothas!
Just what I said!

it feels so sad to see the seleccao traveling to Poland/Ukraine with such a spirit!Since 2000, we didn't go to a tournament feeling that we're that down and nothing in hands to show...looks like an army heading to a war without its assets and guns...donno if I'm the only one who's feeling that bad!I'm really affraid of humiliation! And there is nothing on earth right now that makes me change my mind and prove me wrong but a positive result against the germans: a tie or a win!

I'll back up'em up and root for the seleccao till the last second, behind Bento and his men, and wish that the guys are gonna surprise us and win!

All the best Seleccao!Forca Portugal!!!!

Ronaldo is not as effective playing up top by himself, he's at his best on the outside, making cutting runs in. Not to mention quaresma blows, hangs onto the ball way too long and only passes when he is forced to, creating poor crosses. I'd rather see varela come on as a sub before quaresma.
Ronaldo playing striker..

Has everyone forgotten that he has been tried at playing as a number 9 before? It failed! Why would you take one of our main threats on the wing, and put him out of position and replace him with Quaresma!? Your basically weakening two positions. Quaresma isn't good, I'm sorry. He has that flash of brilliance after 20 games or so and then it vanishes. I say keep Postiga in the number 9 slot and Custodio in DM.

Good comment there, totally in agreement. I still think as far as the front 3 is concerned we should have experimented with the trio of nani, quaresma and ronaldo.not one of the 'natural' number 9's (nelson, postiga, hugo) is up to the task of fulfilling the role.

@jon: I agree. Admittedly, I haven't seen too much of Custodio this season but he really impressed me in the holding role when he came on. Nothing special, just simple things like winning the ball and distributing it quickly and efficiently. I haven't been impressed with Veloso in the last 2 matches (albeit friendlies). He hasn't done much and keeps losing the balls allowing the opponent to counter dangerously. I'd still start Veloso vs Germany as maybe he was poor just based on it being a friendly, however if he falters i wouldn't hesitate to replace him with Custodio.
Custodio could be the key

As I mentioned in a previous article, I wouldn't be surprised if Bento decided to use Custodio instead of Miguel Veloso. Veloso is a quality player at his best, but he lacks the tactical discipline of Custodio. In his short cameo against Turkey, Custodio looked very comfortable in possession, making 3 or4 excellent cross-field passes in the process.

I've watched him play many times for Braga, and he has always impressed. Unlike Veloso, he rarely loses the ball in dangerous areas of the field. He is also much better defensively than Veloso. He can pass just as well, and he is a big threat in the air, which will come in handy against the Germans.
