“We were not inferior to Germany” - Paulo Bento

Reaction to Euro 2012 opener

Fábio CoentrãoPortugal coach Paulo Bento and his players were unanimous in their belief that the Selecção put in a positive performance and deserved more than what they got in the Group B opener against Germany tonight.

Paulo Bento, Portugal coach:
“It‘s tough to take this lost, especially given how the game went. We lost because we were not effective (in front of goal), not because we were inferior to Germany.

“Germany started more dominant, but we controlled matters from the defensive point of view, although we were not strong at launching attacks. We conceded from an unlucky situation. Pepe was well positioned but the ball took a deflection and fell to Mario Gomez, who took advantage.

“Afterwards we had a fantastic reaction and created enough situations to at least have drawn the game. We’re in a phase where we are playing well but we are not winning. We have character and personality, and we have to try and continue to work to earn our luck because it won’t appear if we don’t run.”

(On Denmark match) “We’re going to play against a team that has three points and is in a more comfortable position than us. We are under more pressure, but we’re used to that. We have to continue to strive to win and  play well. We‘ll be playing against a team that has beaten us twice, won once and lost just once recently.

“Denmark finished ahead of Portugal in qualifying for the World Cup and the European Championship. We have to get the three points because it’s the only way we can get to the last match still in the fight for our objective. I‘m not surprised at the Denmark result. Denmark was made out to be the ugly duckling of this group, but that‘s wrong. I believe things will be decided in the last round of matches.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal captain:
“In the second half Germany only had one chance. We hit the woodwork twice and had clear chances. I’m very frustrated. We deserved more than this defeat - at least a draw. We‘ve been improving in our latest games but the goals haven’t been coming. It’s a question of bad luck.

“The team’s disappointed because of the result, but not the performance. Nothing is lost. In 2004 we started with a defeat, and we ended up in the final. If we continue to play like this we’ve got the chance of doing the same thing. I just spoke to José Mourinho; he’s also confident and gave us strength for the next games. I also spoke to Ozil, who said we would win our next games because we have a great team.”

Raul Meireles, Portugal midfielder:
“We did everything to get a different result. We showed determination, but football is like that. We leave here confident for our next match because we played a great game.”

Fábio Coentrão, Portugal left-back:
“We have to lift our heads because nothing is lost. It was an unjust result, and even if we had drawn I’d be standing here saying it was an unfair result. When you play well and you don’t achieve you aim it’s very disappointing, but we’ll respond well. I‘m optimistic for Wednesday. We continue to depend only on ourselves. If we win the next two games we‘re in the quarter-finals.”

Nélson Oliveira, Portugal striker:
“I think we played a great game, we were just lacking a touch of luck. We had several chances but we couldn’t score. We have to lift our heads. We lost but we played a great game.”

Silvestre Varela, Portugal winger:
“the team fought well and worked hard. We‘re confident we can turn this round. That miss? Everything happened quickly. I saw an open net and tried to hit the ball in but the goalkeeper made a great save. There’s nothing I can do about it now, it’s a question of moving on to the next game. It’s not a good result but it’s an unjust one.”

Read English much?
29 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 02:36
OK Guys, I know this is an English language site for fans or Portuguese football...but really, learn how to read English before you call me out.

@NJ - not sure why you are calling me out, maybe you think you are one of those experts I referred to? the ones that predict that Portugal will get killed...but in the same sentence saying "it wouldn't surprise me if they won".

NJ - you are usually one of the first guys here after a Portugal loss with your views and comments...which usually start with "i didn't see the game...just the highlights".

As for Jonnie/JoaoHolandaORLANDOsupremebigmacGINO - methane? man, nobody here reads your long winded posts...stop taking yourself so seriously dude - no one else here does. These multiple personalities you create to support your very poorly written opinions aren't necessary.

when you write

"I had a couple of beers with some German's" - it ends right there guy...there is no apostrophe. You're (that is you are) a clown...you are a wanna be Gino who writes like one.

Stick to talking about the South American all-stars...that would be Benfica. Leave the talk about the National team to those of us who are passionate about the guys who represent our country. Let us be optimistic, let us see the good in these guys - why do you always have to come on here and revel in the negative?

Are you such a small man that you must be right about something that you have no control over? Something you have nothing to do with? Your comments/thoughts on this team wouldn't rate with anyone connected to the team or anyone who follows the game.

You are a sad little man
Ronaldo as striker a disaster
28 Monday, 11 June 2012 14:43
As some mention having Rolando play as a striker would be a complete disaster. laying Ronaldo as your main striker has many drawbacks. For instance, the space available for him to run would shrink, and that's one of Ronaldo's best attributes - exploiting spaces. You would take away from him, and you'd have a less threatening winger instead. It's a lose-lose situation in my opinion. In addition, Ronaldo in one on one situations is average. He's not a clinical finisher in these situations, should they arise. I believe Almeida could have helped instead of Postiga, although the main issue on that night was the tactical approach by Bento. Portugal dominated the game after they conceded, and it's a shame they had to play extremely defensively for that long. But then thats football.

In Euro 2004 Portugal started campaign with a defeat and ended runner up. In last WC both Germany and Spain lost openers to Serbia and Switzerland and we all know what happened. So my belief is tat if they play with proper team spirit and defend well they should cruise past Denmark and the Dutch.

Everyone is crying out for big changes in the line-up against the Danes. I'm not totally convinced this is neccessary, I think what really needs to change are the tactics. Start the same line-up against Denmark (it is our strongest one and it did pretty well against the Germans), but go for attack rather than the defensive tactics displayed against Germany. Well we simply have to attack, because a draw is no good is it?

I think against the Germans, Bento's tactics for the first half were spot on. Be solid, don't give anything away and make sure we're not chasing the game right away. But for the second half, he shoud've changed things (way before they scored), as it was obvious that we were on equal footing to these slightly over-rated Germans and that the win was there for the taking if we only showed some more ambition. Everyone agrees how much better we looked after conceding the goal, and started to attack.

Postiga only looked poor because he wasn't getting suppourt and we defended too much in the match. But i still trust him to score, providing chances are made from him (he has the best scoring record for the Seleccao in the squad). Nelson is our future and is a great raw talent, but i believe it would be best to bring him on in the second half again, if we need to score. Overall I expect a much different game against the Danes, and if we can play the way we know best (ATTACK) then we should be able to win.

In terms of the dynamics of the group, I'm not sure if i agree with most people's view that it would be best if Germany beat Holland. If this was to happen the Germans would qualify and then possibly rest the first team against the Danes, who would have a great chance to win a second match and get 6 points and make things very difficult for us in the process. I think best would be a Germany-Holland draw, meaning the Germans would still need something against the Danes. A second Danish defeat would send them out and this would mean we'd be the favourites to qualify alongside the Germans. But let's take things one match at a time, the bottom line is we need to beat the Danes first to have any chance. We all fully expect this...let's make sure we go out and do it by playing our natural attacking game...FORCA SEMPRE!!!
Nelson Oliveira

Correct me if I'm wrong but in Euro 2004 didn't Ronaldo start the first game on the bench and then after losing that game Scolari decided to start a very green but very talented CR every game after that. CR ended up being named the Young Player of the Tournament. I think Nelson Oliveira is in a similar situation. Let him start and I think the team will really benefit. For corners alone his height and strength would be a huge advantage. We won 10 corners but only had one chance and Postiga was seriously out muscled in the box. I know some people will point to his lack of playing time and being green but the way he held up the ball against two quality German defenders and was able to pass the ball back into the box was a move I'd expect from a veteran, the only problem was that the the guy receiving the pass wasn't CR or Nani. Oliveira is everything that Postiga isn't; talented!
Prediction
25 Monday, 11 June 2012 07:24
I predict that this will happen:
Denmark 1 Holland 0
Germany 1 Portugal 0
Germany 3 Holland 1
Portugal 3 Denmark 1
Germany 4 Denmark 0
Portugal 2 Holland 0

Germany 9
Portugal 6
Denmark 3
Holland 0

I really think rui patricio deserves the #1 on the shirt i hate seeing that he is very calm and catches balls well something eduardo doesnt do. portugal was better than germany the defences on both sides were just amazing.

Starting Line up from now on:

Rui Patricio
Lopes-Alves-Pepe-Coentrao
Varela-Veloso-Moutihno
Nani-Oliveira-Ronaldo

Subs:
22 Beto
21 J. Pereira
14 Rolando
20 Viana
16 Meireles
10 Quaresma
23 Postiga
Nelson should've stayed on the damn bench
24 Monday, 11 June 2012 04:14
they were doing fine with Postiga in there pressuring the ball. he worked his ass off the whole game and forced play. he's not the best attacker but his play reminded me of lisandro lopez.

Nelson just doesn't offer much at all he wasn't in any good attacking positions. he had one play late in the game and even then he seems overwhelmed.

Pepe was amazing on D and unlucky with his strike.
Plenty to play for.
23 Monday, 11 June 2012 03:05
Lol, Voice of Reason.
I doubt anyone that thought we would get killed would be disappointed with a win. Just because it was tough to see anything else but that, it doesn't mean we're happy it didn't happen.
By the way, last time I checked we did lose and have 0 points in the group.

I was really proud of our team and how they played. But coming off such horrible performances, any improvement would of looked good.
The result was harsh, since a draw would have been fair. But remember that German fans are now stating how poor their squad was.

We need to keep it going and beat Denmark. Not only beat them up a good 2-0 or 3-1 score line would really help.
I feel much better about our squad after the German match, but let's see how they respond.

By the way, how anyone can say that Nani should be our #10, it's crazy. Maybe if he had played it before, but he hasn't. He's selfish and makes bad decisions out wide, how won't he in the middle.

We're still not talking about Quaresma, are we?
@ Jaime

Garunteed if Portugal played the way you are stating, we would have been ripped to shreds! The Germans were tired out and thus decided to park the bus.

The tactics Bento played were just right. Like I said before, we lacked the luck with our scoring chances.
Make lemonade from Lemon
21 Monday, 11 June 2012 02:40
The good news- Nelo showed is he more effective than our other options. Hopefully, Bento now knows he has to start he. He is young and raw, but the way he threaded two defenders and held up the ball for a beautiful pass, was awesome. Well not really, but for sure something Postiga and Almedia couldn't do. Towards the end of the game bring in Postiga. He has a true poachers instinct, but doesn't help the attack. Almeida killed his carreer by going to Turkey. He should have stayed in the German leagues. It was sad that we couldn't use him in a game where we had some many corners, but his skill level is way down.

Denmark are going to be tough. They no we are desparate and will park the bus and try to hit us with a counter attack. If we start like we finished against Germany, then we should be fine. If we are overly patient, time will be against us.

Let the boys run and attack, better to lose knowing you gave it your all, then lose wondering....

I believe playing an attacking style will be our best bet. We have the talent to do so, we looked much more impressive than the Germans once we started to play to score.

The Danes will try to win on set pieces and counter attacks, so lets just attack hard with fewer men, we can.

I feel that if they play like they did today and once they get that first score, they would dominate Denmark. The question is, will they get that first score.

The positives from this game our that we have found a budding striker. He may not be the greatest(he is young), but much better than the other two. Who knows maybe he will get a hat trick against Denmark!

Also we showed we can play with anyone.

Forca Portugal!

Here is how this will go down:

Denmark - Portugal 2-1
Germany - Holland 0-5
Denmark-Germany 2-0
Portugal - Holland 6-0
In the end players showed up..

Could've had a few balls go in and against the Favs of the tournament it was a good game..

But let us face facts the formation was the same.. the German's failed in taking the game to our aerial weak spots and besides the gaffes by Veloso & Pepe.. that would've been a tie match.

We have the Voice of Reject on here babbling about how great this loss was.. and it definitely could've been worse.. many Portuguese players.. played great in shutting the German's down.. Coentrao was a demon.. many good players.. I still think Portugal has one of the best squads in the world.. when they are organized properly.. and the tactics are correct.

Unfortunately the skill of the manager does not match the squad.. and this will be a wasted campaign.

When I heard of the group of Death.. I always thought the Danes would win the group.. and two giants would go out.. so far I have been bang on the money.. everyone is overlooking the Danes.. and they play like a team.. their defence is decent.. and they have a great midfield that burned Portugal too many times..

Portugal is still in there.. but we need to beat the Dutch... and hope for the Dutch to beat the Germans.. and for the Danes to do the Germans too.. a lot of ifs ands and maybes...

Let us not mince words this Portugal team.. add a few more players.. that were negated by The BentHole.. as well as the proper formation/tactics and we would sweep this group easily.

What is grievous are those folks who continually bring up Quaresma.. years of incompetence and too much playing time.. should make this a complete face palm subject.

Anyone that brings him up should be immediately ridiculed.. and set ablaze..

Since we know that crap gives off methane gasses that are combustible the Voice of Reject should be used as the flame starter...

I always said it is in the players hands.. and they fought valiantly.. much to be proud of.. nothing to be ashamed of..

BentHole to his credit got us to the tournament after QueerEyes was such a colossal failure.. but that is all the credit he deserves.. and he is a one formation.. non-complex manager that puppets the FPFF..

Anyways the flags are up the jerseys ironed.. and we will not die without a fight.. real fans.. take on all action...
Bento's Tactics Fine
18 Sunday, 10 June 2012 22:46
I agree with those who have stated this on Bento's tactics. Bento did a great job and team unity is high!

The Germans play better when they can impose their counter attack team as they have excellent speed and movement. With Gomez as the starter they miss the link up play that Klose presents so by making them play with the link up play and counter attacks makes it more difficult as they have few creative players except Ozil. The outside forwards can score but depend on movement and speed to put them in position.

Bento has the right plan and he can not be faulted for the chances we did not score. The Denmark game will provide Portugal chances to play ball control but we will need to watch the industrial Dane's counter attack. We can beat the Danes if we play ball control with quick movement and if we can finish our chances of course. At this point we should play Nelson O up front to see how it goes and bring in the other striker options later. Not sure if playing Nani as a #10 will work but we can try for this game. It is too late to experiment too much at this point.
Nelson Oliveira
17 Sunday, 10 June 2012 22:21
Oliveira will make things easier for Ronaldo and Nani since he is capable of making something out of nothing(unlike Almeida and Postiga). His pace and athleticism can cause any defense problems, and as he's shown for Benfica and for Portugal yesterday, he is a very good passer/crosser of the ball as well.

Yes he is inexperienced, but he has so much to more to offer than Postiga and Almeida.
Agree With You Jon & Ahmad
16 Sunday, 10 June 2012 20:09
Also to some others, don't hate on Bento, he's doing a good job. His tactics were fine for that game like many have said it almost worked if it weren't for that lucky deflection/break the Germans got. Also had luck/our finishing been better we would have won anyway. Bento's management and set up and subs and everything were perfect. One more thing I would like to see him do is start Nelson Oliveira from now with Ronaldo and Nani on either side of him. Its a good sign that Bento brought on Nelson as the first sub for Postiga so that shows the faith Bento has in him and the new ranking among them. Nelson impressed and imposes himself on the game very well. He's got more ability to influence a game and win it. I think we all can see this. I have a feeling Bento realizes this also. Hope he starts Nelson from now on! Just for the haters - NO I am NOT saying he is a savior, he's just better than the other options. I believe in this team! Forca Portugal!!!

15 Sunday, 10 June 2012 18:30
ok we lost, but the important thing is we played well enough to win this game. I would not change much against Denmark, maybe 2 strikers... leave Meriless off.
Nani our #10
14 Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:12
Why cant we turn Nani into our #10. He definitly can handle the ball at his feet and has the ability to pass in the lanes. Why not do this since we have so many options on the wings.
Oliveira
13 Sunday, 10 June 2012 15:08
Fully agree with Jon/USA...Just Start Nelson Oliveira for Postiga/Almeida!

Never ever think of Quaresma! He's not even a sub!I'd like to see Varela coming in at the last moments of the game as was done against Germany!Quaresma failed to improve on the international level we have to take it!

Let's lift high our heads...I'm sure we'll beat Denmark! Later we'll talk about our chances againt Holland!Let's see how will they perform against Germany first!

I just got back the confidence in the team...that confidence that was lost in our friendly games!

Forca Portugal!
LOL
12 Sunday, 10 June 2012 15:00
LOL a former defender is the coach. You honestly think we are gonna play good offensively? I really hope Spain wins yet another title so these hard headed clubs and national teams get that the Barcelona style of play is the best and most perfect there every has been created. I am a Real Madrid fan by the way. Hey they always said 3 times is a charm. Lets hope Spain's 3rd straight title changes the archaic thinking by idiots like Bento, Quieroz and almost 99% of all coaches in the world.
Bento Is Not The Answer
11 Sunday, 10 June 2012 12:54
We need a trainer who doesn't believe losing to Germany 1-0 is a success. Anyone watching the game could see we were playing for a 0-0 tie. We should have taken it to the Germans like we did to Spain when we beat them 4-1. Sitting back gives the players to much to think about. We should have attacked, attacked, and thwn attacked some more. We did this in the last 15 minutes and the Germans looked like they were scared and parked the bus in front of goal. Playing conservatively like this is pathetic. If Bento does again aginst the Danes, the FPF shouod fire him and themselves.
The right attitude
10 Sunday, 10 June 2012 12:41
I was gutted by the result - it was unjust - but I am heartened by the reaction. They aren't giving up

If they maintain the discipline they showed yesterday and capitalize on the chances they create, they can still do some damage in the tournament. Going into the game, it was always going to come down to the game against the Danes and the Dutch - nothing has changed.

In reading all the comments - I'm wondering where all the experts are? The ones that so confidently predicted we would get waxed by the clinical Germans and that our porous defense would get slaughtered by world class finishers like the Dutch. I think we all saw what the Dutch have to offer - nothing to be overly fearful about.

We will get our two wins - much to the chagrin of some of our experts here.

I believe in this team - you experts that like to play the odds and stick with predicting failure should take your posts and your multiple personalities elsewhere.
Same old story - "bad luck"
9 Sunday, 10 June 2012 12:25
At the end of the day, it's better to play crappy and get the necessary result (Italy's modus operendi) than to play well and lose (the history of the "Brazilians of Europe").

The harder you work, the luckier you get.

Despite the loss, and we can all hold our heads high. The way we held our own against the tournament favorites was very encouraging. Great tactical approach from our manager, and one that almost worked. Looking forward to kicking some Danish ass. :)

Forca Portugal.
11 corners and no goal?
6 Sunday, 10 June 2012 11:18
Nelson Oliveira will be the best bet against the Danes instead of Postiga and Almeida. The players feared the Germans and didn't attack earlier in the game and could have beaten them fair and square instead of aiming for a draw by just parking the bus (the nearer the goal the opponents will have more chances). Good luck and beat the Danes once and for all 'cause you're a better team and FORCA!
Quaresma
5 Sunday, 10 June 2012 10:14
Please, with all due respect, don't mention that Quaresma should play instead of Ronaldo and let the latter be a striker... this will be suicidal if we use it. just swap Oliviera for Postiga and we're set and i assure you our game versus denmark will be a one to remember if we didn't play with fear and "too much respect" like we started against the Germans.
Portugal Germany
4 Sunday, 10 June 2012 06:57
We have flair in midfield and attack. Why do we play counter attack? This approach failed in the world cup and will fail again.

Losing 1:0 is still losing and after a while of losing close games one needs to stop blaming luck.

This was an OK German team - nothing to fear. We should had dominated the middle of the park and destroyed them.

Put Ronaldo in the middle and let him move about and cause problems. Whats the point of Nani and Ronaldo hardly touchibg the ball.

Portugal 3 Denmark 0
We need to look forward
3 Sunday, 10 June 2012 05:51
It is always hard to accept defeat...especially after a game we had opportunities to win or even draw the match. Germany have a good team and we had to nullify their game plan by stifling their avenues towards goal by breaking their forward thrusts in their final third. I believe we achieved that....it will also be great if we just took the game to them and attacked...but you will always leave yourself vulnerable to their counter attacks. We do lack a player who can orchestrate play where the likes of our wingers and striker have confidence to make diagonal runs or forward thrusts knowing the ball will reach their feet or weighted enough to get to (ala Rui Costa/ Deco) In saying that...I think Moutinho's pass to Ronaldo was world class...unfortunately Ronaldo didn't put it away. If we can actually believe in ourselves then I strongly believe we will defeat Denmark and more than match Holland.
Starting Eleven
2 Sunday, 10 June 2012 01:40
Portugal played well against Germany. They showed they can compete with the best and were just unlucky to not have come away with at least one point.

I just don't understand why Paulo Bento doesn't try Ronaldo as Striker, with Quaresma and Nani on the wings... it would be a deadly attack!
This game was a confidence booster
1 Sunday, 10 June 2012 00:49
Portugal proved that they could match one of the favorites in the tournament. In the end, we were unlucky, but we are more than capable of beating Denmark and Holland. The only change I'd make to the starting 11 is Nelson Oliveira for Helder Postiga.

Nelson Oliveira hasn't had enough playing time at Benfica to be considered a prolific goal scorer, but he has so many weapons that Postiga and Almeida lack.

He has Almeida's strength and Postiga's technical ability. But, most importantly, he has incredible pace and athleticism. He can run at defenders with the ball, and he can make clever runs behind the defense. As he showed today, he also has the vision to pick out an excellent pass. He was excellent today, so hopefully Bento will start him against the Danes.
