Portugal v Denmark: the key contests

PortuGOAL looks at the match-ups that could decide the crucial clash

Portugal_v_Denmark.jpgPortugal play their second game of Euro 2012 tomorrow evening against Denmark knowing that anything other than a win could ruin their chances of progression from the group stages.

It certainly promises to be a tough task, with the Danes having already shaken off their tag as the whipping boys of the group after defeating the much-fancied Netherlands in their first game.

Denmark rode their luck on their way to a 1-0 win, with the Dutch missing a whole host of chances both before and after the goal. However, during the latter stages Morten Olsen’s side looked increasingly comfortable as they tried to close the game out, and with three points already in the bag, Paulo Bento could find Wednesday’s opponents to be a tough nut to crack.

With the game bound to be decided by the finest of margins, we have looked at some of the key contests on the pitch that could determine who stays alive in the “Group of Death” and who is left staring down the barrel.

Fábio Coentrão vs. Dennis Rommedahl

rommedahl.jpgDennis Rommedahl may be approaching his thirty-fourth birthday but he still provides plenty of pace down Denmark’s right flank and is the man most likely to provide a dangerous cross into Portugal’s box. Fábio Coentrão had one of his best games for the Selecção against Germany on Saturday, and the left-back will need to hit his straps again if he is to keep the experienced winger quiet and nullify one of Denmark’s main sources of attacking impetus.

Meanwhile, perhaps given his age, Rommedahl can be guilty of not tracking back to help out in defence. Coentrão is one of the best attacking full-backs in the world, and if he can exploit Rommedahl’s lethargy in order to double up on Lars Jacobsen with Cristiano Ronaldo then Portugal could well get a lot of joy down the left. He will need to get the balance right though. The Real Madrid star is occasionally guilty of bombing on too much, and if caught out tomorrow then Rommedahl could be the one to prosper.

Miguel Veloso vs. Christian Eriksen

Eriksen.jpgMiguel Veloso was another stand-out performer for Portugal on Saturday, doing a remarkably good job of keeping Mesut Özil quiet. Paulo Bento will be sure to deploy him on a similar spoiling mission tomorrow, with his target this time being Christian Eriksen. Since bursting onto the scene with Ajax two years ago the twenty-year-old has become the heartbeat of this Danish side. He is an attacking midfielder who plays just behind the frontline, and has already turned plenty of heads with his quick feet, good first touch and impressive array of passing. If Veloso can stay tight to Eriksen and stifle Denmark’s playmaker then Portugal will go a long way towards keeping a clean sheet.

Hélder Postiga vs. Daniel Agger

agger.jpgDaniel Agger is the defensive lynchpin of this Danish side. His impressive ball skills also mean that he is often the man to start attacks as the Danes look to pass the ball out from the back, a tactic that occasionally backfired against the Netherlands. Hélder Postiga spent long periods on Saturday chasing lost causes, as the German defence effortlessly passed it around Portugal’s lone striker. If Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani can push up on their full-backs when not in possession and deny Agger an obvious out-ball then Postiga’s tireless work rate could force Agger into making a mistake, or at least looking for a Plan B.

The Zaragoza forward will need to have more of an influence on proceedings tomorrow than he did at the weekend if he is to keep his place in the side, and with his wingers likely to provide him with more chances this time around a good bit of movement or cool head in the box could mean that he is the man to turn the game in Portugal’s favour.

If Portugal can win these three battles tomorrow then they will go a long way towards winning the war against Denmark, a victory that could prove to be a giant step towards the quarter-finals.

Quaresma

Quaresma will play this match ?
Play as a team and we should win...

I said months ago and i repeat, we just have to match Denmark's team-spririt and togetherness and we should win, because there is no question who has the more talented players. Stick with the same line-up vs Germany (our strongest) but just change the tactics...and go out all offence. When Denmark beat us in the last qualifier, we had half the first team missing, I'm interested to see what difference two fully fit squads makes..

A win today is imperative for us to be able to qualify from this group and would put us in a decent position. A draw wouldn't end our qualification hopes but would make things very complicated. So Bento must forget about the caution he showed against the Germans and just go for it. I'd like to see much more efforts on goal this time, and hope Ronaldo and Nani shoot on sight....FORCA!!!
Attack right away!

C'mon Boys! Run riot and bamboozle the Danes with goals!!!

Today Portugal have to play as a Team. Am tired of hearing articles on the media too stuff like “Rolando needs more support from the rest of the players to perform”
History has show that great players have done wonders with their solo efforts. Remember as a small boy watching the 1986 WC where Argentina had a mediocre team. Yet they won the WC due to Maradona. In 1990 their team was even worse and he took them to the finals.
I am a big fan of Ronaldo but have to admit that when it comes to the national side he makes lame excuses for his poor performance. If he wants to show his greatness this is the moment. In Euro campionship he encounters world defenders and not small fry defenders from teams like Zaragoza ,Sporting Gijon etc from Liga where he runs riot.
I honestly think that given the team they have this Euro, against Germany that day they played well and Bento got his strategy right. Was just bad luck that they did not score. Am positive against Denmark they will win.
Simao

Sorry I forgot to add Simao to great past players
Nelson Oliveira

I've always been one to criticise Bento but to be honest against Germany I feel he got most things right.

I hate to say this but I have been watching the side since Euro 96 and I have to say this is the worst side we have had. We have always had great teams since then and great players like Paulo Sousa, Fernando Couto, Rui Costa, Luis Figo and Sergio Conceicao (who scored a hat trick over Germany). That being said we still have some great players and probably the third best player of all time Ronaldo who I rate as currently behind Eusebio and Figo only because he has not hit his peak yet. So my point is we dont have the guns in all positions to stand up to Germany but we do have world class players that can beat anyone on the counter attack

In my opinion the key players are Coentrao, Ronaldo, Nani, Pepe and Rui Patrico and also Nelson Oliveira. Coentrao would be far more effective on the left side of midfield and maybe Bento knows this as just never stops running and is very direct but with Silvio or any other player capable of playing left back then we really have no other option but to play him at left back.

Carvalho would have organise the defence and Pepe has taken this responsibility on but if he gets suspended or injured then there is no genuine leader in the defence.

Rui Patricio whilst not world class is solid and gives the defence confidence.

Nani and Ronaldo no need to comment

Postiga is a great worker but to be honest so what. His job is to hold up the ball and distribute to wingers and score goals. He doesn't really do any of those consistently well which is a shame because he had a lot of potential starting out when he was at Porto and then Tottenham. I think that if Portugal are to progress past the groups stages they need Nelson Oliveira to come of age, he has the ability but will he have the confidence. I think he could be world class he can run direct at players, hold up the ball run down the wings head the ball and strike from distance he has everything and is a huge talent but with the weight of a nation on his heads it going to be a lot of pressure.

In regards to Richardo Queresma i tottally agree with those who say that he can make the difference. Guys Sporting sold Ronaldo so they could keep this guy he was always valued higher than Ronaldo as a youth player. The problem I have with him is that he hardly every turns up. For a player of his ability he has failed at every big club he has gone Barcelona, and even Mourinho could not get the best out of him at Inter. It would be a massive risk to play him and to be honest I wouldn't have him in the squad. Someone like Vaz Te would have been better

Well i'm out Forca and lets win tonight
Formation 4-2-3-1 / 4-1-2-3
19 Wednesday, 13 June 2012 08:46
Patricio

Perreira - Pepe - Alves - Coentrao

Veloso

Moutinho - Meireles

Nani - Ronaldo - Quaresma

My Opinion. Postiga didn't do anything in the last game, I was not impressed. I think we need 3 Fast Strikers in front of the Squad, Denmark is not an Easy task.
The only two things that really matter.
18 Wednesday, 13 June 2012 04:10
1) Getting solid passes, through passes and crosses to Ronaldo. He is our best player and MUST be supplied. When he has the ball, he scores, assists or provides space for other players to receive the ball.

2) Either Pepe or Bruno Alves MUST mark Bendtner for the entire game. He's nothing special but in the box, he is dangerous and must not be left ALONE (like the way Mario Gomez was in the Germany game).

Those two things will make us be TRULY strong offensively and defensively. Everything else is good.

Last time Portugal beat Brasil RQ10 was Man of the Match. Give him some minutes and maybe he is the catalyst to catch Ronaldo on fire and ignite. Better late than never.
I'll beat the drum yet again...

I dream of Portugal pride and hope for a turnaround, however from the start Bento has been, is and will continue to be poison to Portugal football. Denmark is a solid resilient side against standard football, but will struggle against creative flair...and yes contrary to the nay-sayers, I say throw in Quaresma at some point - a gamble, but one we may not afford to pass on.
Tactic against Germany wasn't bad
15 Wednesday, 13 June 2012 00:31
Some keep criticizing bento for being too conservative against Germany. They held a powerhouse to one goal and if not for a crossbar by Pepe or major flub by Varela at the end, Portugal would have tied and Bento would be a genius. It wasn't a bad strategy, it was again the inability to finish. Now going back to Postiga again, that is Bento's fault. Time to let Nelson start. Yes he is young, but he made more happen in 10 minutes than Postiga in 80.
Tomorrow
14 Wednesday, 13 June 2012 00:22
Tom K wrote a great article that was posted on soccernet.

Tomorrow is all about capitalizing on the chances they create.u There is no comparison between the two rosters - the difference seems to be that Denmark seem to finish the few chances they get, and we waste them - the waste leads to frustration and unraveling.

I couldn't agree more with Inacio about Bendtner - the guy saves his best for us, we have to hope that Pepe and Alves shut him down...he too can lose confidence and start pouting on the field. Breaking Bendtner's spirit will go a long way to beating them.

Is tomorrow the day Ronaldo finally scores on a free kick? God I hope so.
No dumb predictions
13 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:10
Portugal has scored once in their last 4 matches. Denmark is going to play on the counter attack but is willing settle for a point. If they park the bus, we will struggle to score a goal nevermind three or four. We need to go with that sort of lineup we had in the last 10 mins. Even with Germany sitting back and soaking up the pressure.. we still created the best chances in the entire match. Nani will have to operate in the attacking mid with Quaresma/Varela filling in and Postiga upfront. Bring Nelson O in the 60' if we havent scored yet. If we jump out early, revert back to the original 4-3-3 as Denmark will have to come out and attack.
JUST WIN BABY!!!
12 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:06
First let me thank Forca for his lineup. I needed a laugh.

As for the match ups, Coentraos worries me. You can expected him to be a bit more adventurous, but it could really leave us exposed. Coentrao being on a yellow also concerns me.

Bendtner stinks. If our CB's have problems with him, we don't deserve to go further.

Postiga works hard and in ways that don't always translate in a stat sheet. Bento was always going to start him. The question I have is who will come on late, especially if needed, Almeida or Nelson?

For me Moutinho and Meireles have to work better together. They did well halting Germany, but need better flow going forward.
Veloso will be very key in all our matches.

I'm feeling confident, but we tend to make things difficult. A two goal margin just might be necessary. Incredibly we could be looking at a group all knotted up at 3 points with a game left.
We might not win

Octopuss Paulo predicted a Denmark win. How accurate are his predictions?
Must win
10 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:10
This is a must-win game. Postiga underperformed vs. Germany, but Bento’s more conservative tactics early on were at least partly to blame. As the team is likely to take a more offensive approach tomorrow, I can see him getting a few more touches against the Danes, so Postiga is a defensible choice if only due to Portugal’s lack of striker options.

However, I still Oliveira should start tomorrow. He did more in the few minutes he played than Postiga did the rest of the game. Although that was partly due to the Germans sitting back a bit after Gomez scored, which allowed Portugal to heap on the pressure.

Nevertheless, I hope Portugal play more like they did at the end of the Germany game tomorrow and that they don’t squander their opportunities. Denmark is the easiest team to beat in the group and Portugal have no excuse for failure tomorrow - assuming the refs don’t blow it of course ;)
I predict that Ronaldo will have a breakout game tomorrow. Final result 2-0 Portugal, Ronaldo and Nani the goal scorers.
Good Selection
9 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:07
I think Bento made the right selection by going with Postiga, we all know about Postiga but he is our best option. A more attacking approach will benefit Postiga who has scored big goals for Portugal. He can have Nelson ready to go with fresh legs if we need to chase the game later.

I think as average as Postiga is a better creative midfielder which we lack would make Postiga a bit above average but that will not happen at this point. We need Meireles to step up, make those good runs, and stop being wasteful. Plus the average Moutinho needs to step it up and push a bit more so teams don't drop deep waiting for our wings to do something. If Moutinho and Meireles show a pulse and some efficiency we should see a better result.

The Danes will not be easy and they tend to jump on our defensive mistakes. We just need to play solid in the back and not give up soft goals.
Vs. Denmark
8 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:59
I think this game will be more like the 3-1 win in Portugal during qualifying rather than the 2-1 loss in Denmark. Portugal is healthy and like on saturday they will be determined.

Bento already said that Postiga is in. So It's absolutely crucial that he is fully involved in the game at an early stage in order to give Meireles a chance to move forward.

Ronaldo was double-teamed pretty well against Germany. Nani had the ball more as a result but didn't produce any results. Nani must be better.

If they do that and remain solid on defence then it's our game to lose. I predict a 3-1 win for Portugal.
Postiga
7 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:50
Postiga is really frustrating, but I don't have any more faith in Almeida. While I am hopeful that Oliveira can turn into a great striker, he is simply too much of a wildcard for Bento to start him in a match with so much on the line. I also don't think that the less likely, but still advocated by many fans, option of using Ronaldo as a striker is a good choice since this has failed miserably in the past and we would miss out on Ronaldo's play-making ability by virtue of him having less space to work with.

Given all of this, I can understand Bento's decision to stick with Postiga. He may be the least bad option in these circumstances although if I were in charge, I might be tempted to go with Oliveira off the bat and sub him later on if he's not showing positive signs. He deserves it for almost setting up Varela for a goal against Germany. He did more in a few minutes that Postiga the entire game.
Feeling confident...
6 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 19:32
...Denmark's moment in Euro 2012 was beating Holland and I think it will be a case of 'after the lord mayor's parade...' against Portugal. I think we'll score two goals early and comfortably finish the game 3-0 or even 4-0. Forca!

We Can Do It!

Okay Bento has stated Postiga is starting which is probably what was expected. I think Postiga still gives his all for us, and with a more attack minded team vs Denmark tomorrow we can play our fluid game! Postiga works hard and he links up well, has good touch and can pass and finish fairly well! I still would like to see Nelson but its understandable that Bento is relying on what has been proven. Postiga scored 5 goals in 8 qualifiers! He gives 110% for Portugal and always plays his best. Yes he was quiet vs Germany but that was relatively because of our cautious approach. Once our wingers and midfielders get more involved in the attack we can play some great football and score alot of goals! We averaged 3 goals scored per game in qualification! We are definitely capable and we can do this! Nani Meireles Moutinho Ronaldo and Postiga can turn it on! These players are brimming with passion for the team and I believe they'll play a very good game and we can get the win! Our defense has been solid and I wish them the best! Keep up the solidarity and focus! All these players have great heart I can tell! They can make us proud! Looking forward to the game! FORCA PORTUGAL!!!
Denmark is Portugal's bogey team
3 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 16:36
Agger is a top class CB and you'll get very little change out of him. Postiga who, for me, is a pretty average striker would be better off targeting Kjaer, who's had a less than stellar season at Roma, full of errors. The 'keeper Andersen is also a bit suspect on long range shots, so Ronaldo and Nani who are excellent at shooting from a distance could take advantage.

Bendtner, Eriksen, Rommedalh and Krohn-Delhi are more than capable of causing Portugal problem and as proven by the recent matches between the two countries, Denmark know how to beat Portugal.

I predict a 1-1 draw or a 2-1 Denmark win. Sorry lads..
we should play with causion but not with fear
2 Tuesday, 12 June 2012 16:25
This is a team whom we all know has given us alot of troubles. we surely cant ignored them. we will be more free to atack against them. but we should keep our defensive line steady. this is not a matter of rushing over them, because we can still qualify even in the last match.

This dinmark is fast and can of course take their chances when you least spect it. carelesness is not to be encouraged. We should not make our players be ancious to go there and swallow them when we all know that these guys are allways a tough and difficult oponent to us over the past years.
Bendtner
