Post-match reaction: “We knew we had to win” - Miguel Veloso

“When we got to 2-2 we thought we could go for the winner” - Eriksen

postiga-denmark-goal-celebration.jpgThey did it the hard way, but Portugal got the win they needed against Denmark to keep their Euro 2012 fate in their own hands ahead of the final Group B match against Holland on Sunday. PortuGOAL reporter Nathan Motz caught up with some of the Portugal squad after the match for their reaction.

When asked how he felt about getting on the scoresheet, Hélder Postiga insisted he was more concerned about having got the victory. “I’m happy but it’s more important to get the win,” said the Zaragoza striker.

Likewise, Miguel Veloso admitted that “we knew we had to get the win. In the last game against Germany we had no luck and today we made lots of opportunities and the win was very important for us.”

Back-up goalkeeper Beto emphasised that although under heavy pressure, “we dealt with it in the best way.”

Naturally, Denmark’s star man Christian Eriksen was in a far more downbeat mood. The talented midfielder said: “when we got back to 2-2 we thought we could go for the third goal, but now we have nothing.”

Whilst it is true that Helder Postiga has not been the most prolific or consistent striker for the selecao, time and again he contributes vital goals. Pauleta may be portugal's leading scorer but the majority of goals came against low ranked opposition. If you compare the two its quality not quantity that counts and Postiga has scored goals against Germany, England and Denmark - What was Pauleta's best contribution? A hat trick against Poland in a group Portugal failed to qualify from. I think Postiga has earned respect and should be given a little breathing space now he has come up with the goods again.

Yes now we should forget about the individual players and be behind the national team. They all need us
If CR or Mireles or someone else screws up there are the rest of the players to make it up. Team Spirit!! Two lessons to learn from our opponents the past 2 games. From Germany- How organized, disciplined and effective they were in getting the goal. Gomez showed how as a star you have to raise the bar for the moment of brilliance. From Denmark- Even though the Danes were in Top gear with 3 points before the game their never die attitude yesterday from leveling the score.
Come on Portugal this Euro seems a mix bag with all the teams. No team have impressed so far. We can win the Euro 2012.

Postiga has no business being the striker for this national team. Oliveira has better skill, vision, size, and confidence than Postiga and Bento is only going to jeopardize the teams chances in this tournament by being this stubborn. Scolari ran into the same problem in 2004 euro cup when he had Ronaldo on the bench cus he felt he wasn't ready, but Scolari put him in the first game and never looked back. Bento is too stubborn and wants to prove his doubters (Figo) wrong with his decision to keep Postiga as a starter and that will hinder this teams chances.

So far we're among the teams that are doing great! We played two finals till now! And still we have a lot to do! No one can blame Ronaldo now! U can't consider all the great things that he did, his pace, his movings around, his passings as nothing because he just wasted two goal scoring opportunities!Varela's goal must let us forget what Ronaldo did coz right now a win is all what we must think about!
I'm happy to see all our men playing for the jersey! That spirit can only be found among the germans...and now it's Portuguese!
