Match preview: Portugal v Czech Rep

PortuGOAL rounds up the latest news as quarter-final ticks closer

Bentopensive.jpgWith just a few hours to go until kick-off excitement is higher than ever ahead of Portugal’s quarter-final against the Czech Republic, as PortuGOAL brings you the latest from both camps, team news and highlights from past encounters between the two countries.

Paulo Bento turned forty-three yesterday, and speaking at last night’s press conference the Portugal coach revealed that there is only one birthday wish that is dominating his thoughts:

“I want to try and turn my personal happiness into a collective joy during tomorrow’s game. My big hope is that all of the Portuguese people are happy by the end of tomorrow.”

Tonight’s match will take place in the National Stadium in Warsaw, Portugal’s first taste of playing in Poland during this tournament. The forecast is for rain during the game, a little different to the energy-sapping conditions that Portugal have been used to in Ukraine, but Bento was quick to refute claims that his side will struggle having had a day of rest less than the Czechs, praising the resilience of his players:

“Our emotional levels will be strong and physically we will be fine. The organisation that we have already shown means that we can overcome those moments when tiredness may become a factor.”

howard_webb.jpgThe man in charge of the big game will be Englishman Howard Webb. His finest moment as a referee came two years ago when he officiated the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands, an ill-tempered game in which he showed thirteen yellow cards as well as one red.

The former police sergeant has earned a reputation for being hard but fair, and in the two matches that he has refereed at this tournament so far he has only shown three yellow cards. Portugal will need to try and ensure that Webb’s cards stay firmly in his pocket tonight however, with Hélder Postiga, Fábio Coentrão, Raul Meireles, Cristiano Ronaldo and João Pereira all needing to get through another ninety minutes before their bookings from the group stage are wiped off.

All eyes will be on the Czech Republic team sheet later on this evening to see if their captain Tomas Rosicky has recovered in time to play. Rosicky trained for the first time in nine days yesterday, after returning to Prague for treatment on an Achilles tendon injury that he picked up during the game against Greece.

Speaking after the session, the Arsenal playmaker was hopeful of being able to lead his team out against Portugal:

“The chances of me starting are bigger. We will decide what to do depending on how the injury reacts.”

The Czech Republic team manager Vladimir Smicer was much less optimistic however, insisting:

“Tomas will definitely not play from the start. If we are in trouble towards the end then he might come on to try and help us.”

joao_moutinho.jpgIf Rosicky is absent it will certainly make life easier for Portugal’s midfield, but João Moutinho is refusing to take anything for granted:

“We are expecting to come up against a team full of motivation and with very high morale, who are going to try and play their own game. The Czech Republic are very strong and we are going to have to be at our best in order to emerge victorious.”

There is certainly nothing to choose between the sides when it comes to previous encounters. The two countries have only played each other twice before, both times in European Championships, with each team registering one victory each.

Their last meeting came in 2008, when goals from Deco, Ronaldo and Quaresma secured a 3-1 victory, helping Portugal to progress to the knockout stages as the Czechs crashed out in group phase. You can watch the highlights from that game here.

Perhaps the most famous game between the two countries came in 1996, when they also met in the quarter-final. Portugal dominated the game but an audacious chip from Karel Poborsky just after half-time was enough to send the Selecção packing, as the Czechs went on to lose in the final. Relive the moment here:

This time around it certainly promises to be a tense and intriguing game. For those of you who are unable to watch the match then the entire PortuGOAL team will be tweeting throughout. There is not long to wait to see if Portugal can become the first team to book a place in the semi-finals. We hope that you enjoy the game.

Calm

I am feeling very calm about this game, this is a different portuguese side than we are all used to seeing, yes I am a tad bit nervous as there is always a chance for an upset, but in this years Euro this portuguese side seems to be enjoying themselves!!! Thats right I said it!! It may seem unbelievable but the team seems to have great chemistry, by the looks of it they seem to be playing for each other, for their country, its a cohesive unit out there on the field, not just a team of individuals as it has been in the past. We must give the Czechs a great deal of respect as they are here against us instead of Russia....thats got to say something about this team. But none the less, there is no reason why we should lose this game today, it will be a tough one indeed, but if we can play like we are capable of playing I don't see why this ride has to stop here. Look for Nani to get his first goal as well as Nelson O, Ronaldo will hopefully put another home too.. best of luck Portugal!!!! Vamos Portugal!!!!
Can't wait...

...I'm beyond excited for this match. I think we will sweep the Czechs aside with relative ease tonight. I anticipate a very solid, professional job from Bento's men and I'm going for a 3-0 victory for the Selecção, with Nani & Ronaldo getting on the score-sheet. FORÇA!
Forca Portugal!!!

I agree that we shouldnt get too carried away because we are playing a sub par team. Anything could happen in this tournament right now, Portugal need to maintain focus and not lost track of their opponent. Czech rep may spring a few surprises on us, so we gotta be careful. Does anyone know if its true that Positga might sit due to exhaustion and Nelson O will start? Just a small rumor...either one I'll take, but Nelson does bring youth, quickness, and agility which could work vs a aging Czech backline... we shall see, most likely Postiga will start..you never know...raul M and Miguel Veloso have got to keep playing well, and Im very hapy and surprised to see Pepe keeping his cool, very well done Pepe, keep at it!!

Im nauseous just thinking about when this is gonna start!!...Lets go Portugal!!!...Forca!!!!

Let's get excited - it is the quarter-finals, a lot of teams would love to be in this game, their fans would be whooping it up. But not here huh?

Memo to the person who referred to us all as fools for getting excited

1) you are not the coach of the team

2) we are fans - we get excited and we support our men, win or lose, we are still proud of them. The fact that you can't bring yourself to show support unless they win is sad indeed.

3) your direction, while well intentioned, is a message to players...NOT FANS.

If you were in charge of things - there never be any joy in football and nobody would watch, because according to you, you can only get excited and celebrate the ulimate victory - which for some comes only very few times and for others, it never comes.

Let us enjoy the achievements - whatever they are. Getting out of the group stage is something to be happy about - in the knockout phase, anything can happen - the best team doesn't always win.

So please allow us poor fools a little bit of joy and excitement.

Andrei Arshavin said it best...to Russian fans that taunted the team after the loss to Greece - people that are like you.

"The fact that we did not live up to your expectations isn't our problem. It's yours".

They may win, they may not - but they deserve our respect for representing OUR country, the country of our parents, much better than you have here on this board with all of your negativity.

And now one last bit of humour for Tom K, Tom C and Ben Shave - in the world of the immortal Sir Bobby Robson - after England lost in the 1990 world cup to the Cameroons

It was not that we underestimate them - they were just better than we thought.

Cheer up all - today is a great day where we, fans of Portugal are the envy of 99% of the world who could only wish their team was playing today.

If the unthinkable happens and Portugal loses - I'll be here.

I won't criticize and I certainly won't accuse the players of not giving it everything, the coach for imploying wrong tactics, and I most certainly won't accuse anyone of jinxing things. That kind of mentality - the jinx - shows a complete lack of faith in the team, and more alarmingly, a complete lack of understanding of sport (maybe you should trying playing sports instead of just commenting on them after the fact).

A very PROUD PORTUGUESE fool - if that is how you must categorize me.

Lots of overconfidence from both the fans and pundits. Czech Republic should not be underestimated, they won't create acres of space for our wingers to exploit like the Dutch did.
Not only is our left wing still our defensive weakness, we also look weak in our set piece defending the Czech Republic will exploit these weaknesses.

And let us learn from the Russians who were overconfident against Greece, and now they're out of the tournament. I see Portugal making the same mistake against the Czechs.
Humility
7 Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:34
SupremoGino, your 100% right.
I just hope and pray that our entire team exudes humility and respect because this will not be an easy match.
We need to take one game at a time, hope for the best and respect our opponent.
I will say two prayers, one for Portugal playing strongly and the other for Webb - that he may use his hand more than his cards.

FORCA
Nothing is Guaranteed

Portugal should win this game but this is a test to see how well they play as favorites. There is always a chance in futebol for the underdog in a 1 game knock out. Czech Republic does have a fine futebol history and is very capable of an upset though this is not one of their strongest team.

Portugal will dominate and have chances, it will come down to finishing those chances. To keep this in perspective our finishing is not always clinical and we have few players who can finish.

It has been a great ride and I'll be pushing that we extend this ride. Go Portugal!
Our Foes today
5 Thursday, 21 June 2012 14:06
Here is a little about our “foes” today.

Czech Republic was formerly Czechoslovakia and formerly Bohemia! The capital is Prague and it known for its beer festivals, puppeteers and marionettes. It is much like my country Canada in climate, hot hot summers and cold snowy winters.

The Czech Republic has one of the lowest religious populations one earth! Almost 80% of the people are agnostic, athetist or irreligious. A polar opposite to the majority Catholic (and other Christian subsets) people of Portugal and the beautiful city of Fatima (the religious center of Portugal).

Czechs have a very famous scientific history and they invented the contact lense, separation of modern blood types, and semtex plastic explosives (ok that one isnt the best invention, hah). Portugal and the Czech Republic lie on the very far south-east and far south-west ends of the EU.

HAHA, thought you should know a little about the country Portugal will beat today 2-1.

FORCA PORTUGAL, AS ARMAS, AS ARMAS!!

Everyone around here is looking forward to the celebrations after the match. You know - we could lose right? It certainly bothers me how egotistical these people can be. I even have to urge family members to keep reserved and humble for this game. Every match will take a bit of luck from here on out. I can remember when the English press would belittle our team in 2006 and prepare for victory prior to the match. You fools. Quit jinxing our team and give our opponents the respect they deserve.
